Example: 7:00 - seven o'clock (but 7:10 - ten past seven) In English ordinary speech, the twelve-hour clock is used.timetables usually use the twenty-four-hour clock. In spoken English, the twenty-four-hour clock is, however, only used in official announcements, but not in ordinary speech. When to change from afternoon to evening, from evening to night and from night to morning depends on your sense of time. Example: 3:15 - a quarter past three in the morning OR a quarter past three at night More formal expressions to indicate whether a time is before noon or after are a.m. (also: am - ante meridiem, before noon) and p.m. (also: pm - post meridiem, after noon). Use these expression only with the formal way of telling the time. Example: 3:15 - three fifteen a.m. It is not usual to use a.m. and p.m. with past/to. Example: 3:15 - fifteen minutes past three OR a quarter past three

15 P a g e 60 American English Beside past Americans often use after. Example: 06:10 - ten past/after six But: in time expressions with half past it is not usual to replace past by after. Beside to Americans often use before, of or till. Example: 05:50 - ten to/before/of/till six Nouns showing time, day, date, month, year - six o clock, Sunday, 1 st of May, July, 2006 In British English, abbreviations are usually written without full stops (Apr), full stops are normal, however, in American English (Apr.). 23 P a g e 68 Text B, for Questions number 8 to 10 Nowadays people compete to get a better job for their life. It is somehow not easy to find the job that we really want to. Sometimes to keep working in one job needs a lot of sacrifices even though we don t like it anymore. It is probably because of particular reasons. Yet, we still take it. Here are some following comments about their employers and jobs. Roni, a 29 year accounting staff, often felt reluctant when he met his manager. He thinks that his manager was very arrogant and bossy. He was always asked to do whatever his manager wanted to. In fact, the job frequently required him to spend extra hours everyday. He d often complained to himself but he didn t dare to talk about these to his manager. Thus, he decided to find another job. Maya, aged 25, works as a telephone operator in one of foreign company. What she has in mind about her current job is pretty boring. She really wants to advance her career at least to be a secretary, which she thinks more prestigious and obviously make more money. Everyday she is always busy handling the telephone. Most of people think that career needs to be developed so that they still can find the satisfactory on their job. Career satisfactory is not only influenced by having good salary, but also relationship towards employers, since there should have been a harmonic and friendly atmosphere surrounded both sides. 8.
