ABSTRACT The presence of the interference in the analysis with the atomic absorption spectroscopy will influence the accuracy of the result. The aim of this investigation is to find the answer of the problems :" How is the effect (thee interference) of the elements cobalt, nickel and copper, when each e- lement is in one mixture with iron, and how do we over come that interference?" The steps in this investigation are carried out by determining the optimum analytical condition of iron; to know the effect of the concentration variation of the interfering elements towards iron absorbance at a certain concentration in HCl, HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 medium; to know the effect of the flame condition towards iron absorbance ; and to know the effect of adding certain organic agent to the matrix solution as a means to overcome the inter ference. The result of this investigation showed that those three elements interfered seriously, they decreased the iron absorbance at optimum analytical condition. The magnitude of those interferences strongly depends on the flame condition with respect to acetylene gas flows rate, the height of the burner and is also depends on the anion present in solution. It was known that in HN0 3 and H 2 SO 4
lx medium, the interference observed was greater than in Hcl medium. It was also known that 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) can also function as an effective releasing agent at a greater concentration than the interfering elements concentration. From the application of view point, showed that the anaysis method by way of atomic absortion spectroscopy has a high precision that could be seen from the standard deviation (s) value. On the iron determination in copper wire sample, the standard deviation value was 2,5 for the determination without oxine, and 1,09 for the determination with oxine. On the iron determination in netting wire sample, the standard deviation value was 0,18 for the determination without oxine, and 1,98 for the deter mination with oxine.
