1 MINGGU 6 Diskripsi singkat : Mahasiswa diberikan bacaan ringan untuk diterjemahkan, cloze passage, grammar exercise dan terjemahan dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris Manfaat : Setelah mengikuti kuliah mahasiswa dapat : 1. Mahasiswa bisa melatih grammar exercise dan mengisi cloze passage 2. Mahasiswa bisa membaca dengan pronounsation yang benar dan cepat 3. Mahasiswa bisa menterjemahkan bacaan bahasa Inggris dengan istilah teknik 4. Mahasiswa dapat menterjemahkan dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris Relevansi : Bab ini melatih mengerjakan grammar exercise dan cloze passage. Dan memperlancar membaca juga melatih menerjemahkan, serta latihan menterjemahkan dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris.. Learning Outcome Mahasiswa mampu mengerjakan cloze passage dan grammar exercise Dan bisa membaca dengan pronounsation yang benar serta mampu menerjemahkan dengan baik dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia dan sebaliknya. 2 David has a bad tooth. He is at dentist s Story. The tooth had been bothering David for some time. He knew he should have gone to the dentist s earlier. But in spite of the pain he had put it off. He always put off going to the dentist as long as possible. The dentist smiled pleasantly at first. David told him that the tooth had kept him awake the night before. Then the dentist looked into his mouth, but he did not look only at the one tooth. Instead he looked them all over. hmm, he said. I m afraid several of your teeth need seeing to. He smiled again. But this time it was a rather grim smile. He began to describe exactly what needed doing. David listened to him with a kind of sick feeling in his stomach. I should say that at least four teeth have cavities and then some of your old fillings are loose. We ll have to see to them immediately! David asked about the tooth that had been aching. I may be able to save it, the dentist said, and smiled grimly again. He got his electric drill ready. Now, he said with another grim smile, this shouldn t hurt too much. He came nearer. Vocabulary Find the words or phrases that mean : 1. give trouble to 2. not do immediately 3. examine 4. hard; suggesting that something bad is about to happen 5. a kind of hole in teeth 6. what the dentist puts in the hole 7. take care of 8. dentist s instrument Need doing is another way of saying ought to be done. Reply as B does here. A : The dentist ought to see to those teeth. B : Yes, they really need seeing to, don t they? 1. A mechanic ought to repair that car 2. Somebody ought to look after those children 3. The police ought to look into his matter. 4. Somebody ought to cut the grass 5. You ought to clean this room. David put off going to the dentist s. He did not : 1. phone the dentist 2. pay his phone bill 3. prepare next Tuesday s programme 4. get a haircut 5. pay his taxes 6. book his holidays D I A L O G U E Dentist : A David : B A : What seems to be the trouble, Mr. David? B : It s my tooth here, it s aching. A : I see. Has it given you a lot of trouble? B : Yes it keep me awake last night. A : Just let me have a look. Open wide, please Hmmm. Now I ll just look over the other teeth. B : You mean, you want to look them over now? A : Yes. Open wide, please. Now, when I press like this B : Ough! A : Does that hurt? B : Yes, it does. A : Open again please. Wider. And.does this hurt? B : Yes it does, which tooth was it? A : Just a moment, please. Open again. Hmmm, I m afraid several of your teeth need seeing to. B : Several? But its only this one that is aching. A : Yes, but in spite of that, I should say that at least four of your teeth have cavities. B : Cavities in four teeth? Are you sure? A : At least four, I should say. And then some of your old fillings are loose. Yes, hmm, four fillings will have to be seen to immediately. B : But what about the tooth has been aching? A : Oh yes. 4 The dentist saya that it is necessary to see to four fillings immediately. He says : Four fillings will have to be seen to immediately. In the same way, say that it is necessary to : 1. take an X-ray at once 2. pull out three teeth 3. do a lot of work today 4. see to a lot of things 5. put in four new fillings. Grammar Exposition and Exercises Until and as soon as - Until indicates how long the action of waiting will go on - As soon as indicates when the action of getting out will start. Example : A : Wait here, I ll be back in a few minutes B : All right, I ll wait until you get back. A : The train s going to stop soon. We must get out immediately B : All right. I ll get out as soon as it stops. Now answer as B does. Use either until or as soon as. 1. The bell s going to ring soon. You must go into class immediately 2. Stay under this tree. The rain s going to stop soon. 3. Watch this television programme. It s going to end soon. 4. The lesson s going to end soon. Come out then 5. Stay with me for a few minutes. I think I ll feel better soon. 6. Mary s going to come soon. Wait for her! 7. Study this carefully. Then you ll understand it! 8. Finish that homework! Then come out with me. Linda s father is in hospital. He had a bad accident. CLOZE PASSAGE Across the Channel Erna Hart is..to swim the English Channel tomorrow. She is.to set out from French coast at five o clock in the morning. Erna is fourteen years old and she hopes to set up a new world.. She is a strong..and many people feel that she is..to succeed. Erna s father.set out with her in a small. Mr. Hart has trained..daughter for years. Tomorrow he will be..her anxiously as she swims the long.to England. Erna intends to take short every two hours. She have something to drink but she will.eat any solid food. Most of Erna s school will be waiting for her on the English Among them will..erna s mother, who swam the Channel.when she was a girl. TRANSLATION Sebuah peluru kendali Trident dengan jarak jangkauan mencapai mil diluncurkan dari Tanjung Canaveral dalam percobaan peluncuran yang dianggap berhasil yang ke 9 dari program Trident angkatan laut yang bernilai 21,6 miyar dolar. Jarak jangkauan peluncuran itu tidak dijelaskan. Sebelas kapal selam sedang dibuat untuk membawa peluru2 kendali Trident dalam tahun Tiap kapal selam akan Aryono Prihandito T. Geodesi FT-UGM 5

6 membawa 24 peluru kendali. Peluru kendali trident juga akan dibawa oleh 10 diantara kapal selam jenis Poseidon yang masing2 membawa 16 peluru kendali. PENUTUP Dengan selesainya ini berati mahasiswa sudah mengerti dan mengetahui tentang cara membaca dengan lancar dan dengan ucapan yang betul serta mencoba menterjemahkan dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia dan sebaliknya.
