Siapa nama? (Use the appropriate term of address.) Siapa nama Ibu? (What is your name, madam?) To ask a child what his or her name is, you say the following: Siapa nama kamu? To ask your teacher s name, you ask one of these questions: 73
Siapa nama Ibu? (For female) Siapa nama Bapak? (For male) To ask someone s name who is of similar age, then you say the following: Siapa nama anda/ saudara? To ask about a third person s name, use dia/ ia (his/her): Siapa nama dia? To tell someone your name, you say the following: Nama saya adalah. To ask who a person is, you say the following: Siapa dia? (The word dia is the third person singular for female or male). In Indonesian, the use of adalah is optional. Thus one can say the following: Nama saya adalah Nano. (or) Nama saya Nano. (My name is Nano.) Nama dia adalah Mala. (or) Nama dia Mala. (Her name is Mala.) Be sure to put the words in the right order, as saya nama means I am the name. Note: The majority of Indonesians use only one name. This is especially true of those from Java. Ibu (madam) is the proper term for greeting a lady when you do not know her marital status. 7. Listen to several short dialogues of people who are answering questions about their family members.
