Dimana-mana guru-guru sekolah dasar mengadakan bermacam-macam perlombaan.. Anita seorang murid di kelas tiga S.D. Dia dan teman-teman sekelasnya ikut dalam lomba gerak jalan. Semua sekolah dasar lain di kotanya juga ikut. Setiap sekolah membentuk regu-regu terdiri dari 16 orang. Anita yang dipilih sebagai pemimpin regunya. Pada hari lomba gerak jalan itu, anak-anak harus berpakaian putih-putih. Semua regu berjalan lewat juri. Juri memberi nilai untuk kecepatannya serta kerapihan seragamnya. Regu yang mendapat nilai yang paling banyak akan menjadi juara. Sesudah semua regu selesai diperiksa oleh juri, juri itu mengumumkan bahwa regu Anita yang menjadi juara. Meskipun regu-regu yang lain tidak menang, anak-anak itu tidak begitu kecewa karena mereka tahu bahwa gerak jalan baik untuk kesehatannya. (i) Who participated in the marching competition? 12 QUESTION 2. (Continued) (c) Bandung 7 September 1997 Jeff yang baik, Bagaimana kabarnya? Bagaimana dengan teman-teman di Flinders High? Saya harap Jeff sekeluarga dan teman-teman sehat-sehat saja. Maaf sekali sudah lama saya tidak menulis surat. Saya sibuk dengan kelas tambahan untuk memperbaiki Bahasa Indonesia saya dan juga saya ikut kelas gamelan. Guru musik saya di Flinders akan senang, ya? Saya mau cerita sedikit tentang kunjungan saya ke desa Ciwaru di kabupaten Kuningan, Jawa Barat. Saya ke sana dengan keluarga Indonesia saya, beberapa minggu yang lalu. Saya rasa pasti kamu akan tertarik. Begini Jeff, di Jawa ada sebuah kepercayaan di mana nama seorang anak harus cocok untuk anak itu. Kalau tidak, kehidupan anak itu tidak baik, misalnya anak itu sering sakit. Di Jawa kadang-kadang nama yang tidak cocok untuk seorang anak diganti oleh orangtuanya dalam sebuah upacara. Biasanya upacara penggantian nama diadakan sekali setiap empat tahun dan diikuti antara enam puluh sampai seratus anak. Kadang-kadang tamunya termasuk orang-orang terkenal dan pegawai pemerintah setempat. Dalam upacara itu ada pembacaan doa, pembacaan Al QurÕan, pidato-pidato dan hiburan seperti tari-tarian dan musik. Kebanyakan orang memakai baju tradisional: orang perempuan memakai kain kebaya dan orang laki-laki memakai sarung, kemeja dan peci. Wah Jeff, makanan yang dihidangkan: lezat sekali, masakan Jawa Barat. Berat badan saya pasti naik lima kilo! Anak yang ingin mengganti namanya mula-mula harus minta izin kepada orangtuanya, kemudian minta nasehat kepada orang-orang pandai tentang nama barunya. Waktu upacara, pemuda yang mengganti nama satu-persatu diperkenalkan kepada orang yang hadir. Dia menyebutkan nama lama dan nama barunya. Bagi saya upacara ini sangat menarik dan saya cukup populer karena saya satusatunya orang barat di situ. Mereka sangat ramah dan dengan senang hati dan sabar menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan saya.
