ABSTRACT Firdha Hayati. 2017. The Correlation between Students Grammar and Listening Ability of Simple Past Tense at the Fourth Semester of English Department Students UIN Antasari Banjarmasin. Pd Keywords: Grammar and Listening, Ability, Simple Past Tense This research is entitled The Correlation between Students Grammar and Listening Ability of Simple Past Tense at the Fourth Semester of English Department Students UIN Antasari Banjarmasin. The objective of this research are (1) to know the level of students Grammar ability on Simple Past Tense at the fourth semester of English Department students UIN Antasari Banjarmasin. (2) to know the level of students Listening ability of Simple Past Tense at the fourth semester of English Department students UIN Antasari Banjarmasin, and (3) to know whether there is a correlation between students Grammar and Listening ability of Simple Past Tense at the fourth semester of English Department UIN Antasari Banjarmasin. This research is a correlational research which the data is analyzed quantitatively. The population of the research is 160 students at the fourth semester of English Department students UIN Antasari Banjarmasin. Then, based on Isaac and Michael Table with 5% error degree, the number of sample in this research is 110 students. The instrument of collecting data is test which consists of Grammar and Listening test to measure students Grammar and Listening ability of Simple Past Tense. Furthermore, Pearson Product Moment formula is used in order to find the correlation between students Grammar and Listening ability of Simple Past Tense. The result of this research shows: (1) students Grammar ability of Simple Past Tense is in good category as the mean score of the Grammar test is 79.84. (2) students Listening ability of Simple Past Tense is in good category as the mean score of the Listening test is 72.22. (3) There is a significant, positive and strong correlation between Grammar and Listening ability of Simple Past Tense at the fourth semester of English Department students UIN Antasari Banjarmasin which is the value of r xy is 0.679 and it means H A is accepted. vii

ABSTRAK Firdha Hayati. 2017. Korelasi antara Kemampuan Tata Bahasa dan Menyimak Mahasiswa Semester Empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Antasari Banjarmasin terhadap Simple Past Tense. Fakultas Tarbiyah dan Keguruan. Dosen Pembimbing: (1) Dr. Ridha Fadillah, S. Pd, M.Ed, (II) Hj. Nur Laila Kadariyah, S. Ag, M. Pd Keywords: Tata Bahasa dan Menyimak, Kemampuan, Simple Past Tense Skripsi ini berjudul Korelasi antara Kemampuan Tata Bahasa dan Menyimak Mahasiswa Semester Empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Antasari Banjarmasin terhadap Simple Past Tense. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui tingkat kemampuan Tata Bahasa mahasiswa semester empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Antasari Banjarmasin terhadap Simple Past Tense. (2) untuk mengetahui tingkat kemampuan Menyimak mahasiswa semester empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Antasari Banjarmasin terhadap Simple Past Tense. (3) untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat korelasi antara kemampuan Tata Bahasa dan Menyimak mahasiswa semester empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Antasari Banjarmasin terhadap Simple Past Tense. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian korelasi yang mana data penelitian ini dianalisis secara kuantitatif. Populasi penelitian ini berjumlah 160 mahasiswa pendidikan bahasa Inggris semester empat UIN Antasari Banjarmasin. Kemudian, berdasarkan tabel Isaac dan Michael dengan tingkat kesalahan sebesar 5%, jumlah sampel pada penelitian ini sebanyak 110 mahasiswa. Instrumen pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini adalah tes, yang terdiri dari tes Tata Bahasa dan Menyimak. Selanjutnya, rumus Pearson product moment digunakan untuk mencari korelasi antara kemampuan Tata Bahasa dan Menyimak mahasiswa terhadap Simple Past Tense. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) kemampuan Tata Bahasa mahasiswa terhadap Simple Past Tense dikategorikan bagus dikarenakan nilai rata-rata tes Tata Bahasa mahasiswa ialah 79.84. (2) kemampuan Menyimak mahasiswa terhadap Simple Past tense dikategorikan bagus dikarenakan nilai ratarata tes Menyimak mahasiswa ialah 72.22. (3) Terdapat korelasi yang signifikan, positif dan kuat antara kemampuan Tata Bahasa dan Menyimak mahasiswa semester empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris UIN Antasari Banjarmasin terhadap Simple Past Tense dimana nilai r xy ialah 0.679 dan H A diterima. viii
