CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY A. Research Type and Design This research is descriptive qualitative. According to Subroto (1992: 23) he states that descriptive method study is the investigating of language system based on the data available. In descriptive method, there is no hypothesis formulated because the research gives explanation about the object and then makes the final conclusion. Qualitative research is an inquiry process of understanding based on distinct methodological traditions of inquiry that explore a social or human problem. This research was aimed to focus on the single phenomenon. The steps that were used in this research method were observing the film carefully, collecting the data of swearing expression, comparing the script and two subtitles from original and the most downloaded subtitle, classifying the data, analyzing the data, and the last is concluding it. B. Data and Source of Data Source of data this research was film entitled TED. The data of this research were swearing words in the form of word and phrase that were collected in the examined film. There were two kinds source of data use in this research. They were primary and secondary data. Primary data consists of word and phrase containing swearing words which is found in TED and its translation. And secondary data was
all of information from informants about the quality. The informants of this research were three raters who assessed the accuracy and acceptability of the translation. The criteria for the rater were as follows: a. He/she is mastering English and Indonesian languages b. He/she is having adequate knowledge about translation c. He/she is having competency and experience as a translator d. He/she is willing to take part in this research In assessing the accuracy and the acceptability, the researcher used the instrument namely questionnaire that was given to the three raters. The result obtained from the questionnaire and then used to find out the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability. C. Sampling Strategy The research employed purposive sampling strategy to get the sample of data from the film and to find the raters. This research focused in parts of the film and of the script which contain swearing words that were used in the form of word or phrase. This research used total sampling strategy. The sample used in this research was all swearing words and their translation which were taken fromted film. The researcher used the sample as the main data in conducting the research. This research neglects the parts which did not contain swearing words.
D. Method of Data Collection There were two kinds of method applied in this research. First was content analysis, second was interview. In content analysis, the researcher watched the film and compared the dialogue with the subtitles, understood the dialogue which contains swearing words, wrote down and gave the number of the data taken. In terms of accuracy and acceptability of the translation, the researcher was using the questionnaire. The questionnaires contain the list of data collection in research then the raters gave scores and argument about the data in a short way. The questionnaire was about the accuracy and acceptability then it was given into the three raters. They gave the score based on the scale and the definition of translation in the rating instrument table. If there was different opinion related to scores that have been given, the researcher did an interview into the raters. E. Research Procedure The procedure was used to describe the process involved in identifying and developing the topic research. The research procedure was applied by the researcher are as follows: a. Watching the film The researcher watched the film both original and the most downloaded one by one, compared the dialogues spoken in Indonesian translation. b. Collecting the data The researcher collected the data from the original and most downloaded subtitles that would be analyzed which contain swearing words and its translations. Then the data were written down. c. Validating the data After collecting swearing words from both subtitles, the researcher validated the data from a native speaker who knows about swearing words and theories about swearing words. d. Giving code to each datum After the data was collected, the researcher coded each datum as follows: Example: Datum 020/TL/MD 020 : The sequence number of data TL TL 1 : Target Language : Target Language from the most downloaded subtitle

Giving questionnaire The questionnaire is given into the three raters dealing with the accuracy and acceptability. The researcher would make some interviews dealing with the difference of scores estimation that had been given by the raters and the researcher itself. f. Analyzing the data The data were analyzed to find out the technique that has been used in translating of swearing words. From the result of questionnaire, the researcher analyzed the effect of translation techniques toward the quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. And then the researcher related it to the theory in the discussion part. g. Drawing Conclusion The researcher draws some conclusions and proposed some recommendations based on the data analysis and research finding.
