Devastating impact of drilling-induced formation damage on productivity of vertical wells and its related techniques of preventing or minimizing the damage has long been standing problems. Mechanisms of the formation damage which may occur during drilling are invasion of mud filtrate incompatible with the formation water, resulting in clay swelling or clay migration, and infiltration of mud particulates into pores of the productive rock. Many disappointing results of horizontal well drilling have also been reported. It is believed that a such kind of damage has been a major contributor to a low productivity in good reservoir quality. This has been becoming serious attention to particularly horizontal well technologists because not only it causes impaired productivity but also a huge number of dollars unrecovered daily resulted from formation damage. Therefore this study is directed to analyzing production losses impacted by drilling induced formation damage. The methodology employed is to compare the inflow performance of a horizontal well to that of a vertical well for a given reservoir. The assumptions used are that the drilling mud design and the overbalance conditions at bottom holes are the same for both the horizontal and vertical wells. Results obtained show that a good drilling mud for a vertical well is not necessarily good for a horizontal well in the same reservoir. For instance, a horizontal-to-vertical productivity ratio of 5 yields a production loss ratio of as high as about 10. Although the loss ratio decreases as the damage severity increases, the absolute value of production loss for each type of the wells significantly increases. The negative impact of formation damage is more pronounced in a reservoir with a higher vertical anisotropic factor.
