Advisor: EmmiNaja, M.Pd. Keywords: reading comprehension, questioning strategy Reading is a process of perceiving a written text in order to understand its contents. Reading is very important to people especially for students. One interesting method that can make the students feel enjoy in reading class is questioning strategy. Questioning strategy is an important technique and it is one of the most popular modes of teaching for the act of asking questions has the potential to greatly facilitate the learning process. Furthermore, by using this method, the students were very active when teaching and learning process was done. The statement of the research problem can be stated as follow How can reading comprehension ability of eighth grade at MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari Tulungagung in academic year 2013/2014 be improved by using questioning strategy? The objective of this study as follow to know how can the reading comprehension ability of eighth grade at MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari Tulungagung in academic year 2013/2014 be improved by using questioning strategy. The research design used was Classroom Action Research (CAR) by Kemmis and Taggart. The participants were the students of eighth grade at MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari Tulungagung. The researcher collaborated with the English teacher to apply the questioning strategy to teach reading to the students of VIII-A MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari. The classroom action research was conducted for 1 month in the second semester of the academic year 2013/2014 that was in May up to June There were 14 students as the subjects of study. The class consists of 8 males and 6 females. From all of the process in cycle 1 from meeting 1 until meeting 3, it can be concluded that there were 5 students or 39% of the total students who could get the score 70. It did not yet meet with the predetermined criteria for success that was 75%. So the researcher continued to the second cycle. From cycle II from meeting 1 until meeting 3, there were 13 students or 96% of the total students who could get the score 70. The improvement of the students score from cycle I to cycle II was 62%. Some weaknesses found in the first cycle, which had been revised, could improve the students ability in reading comprehension in the meetings in cycle 2. Based on the result, the students achievement after using questioning strategy was improved. By observing the students process in learning reading viii
9 from cycle 1 until cycle 2 there are some developments in the teaching and learning process. Some suggestions that can be given to improve the quality of teaching and learning process related to the students reading ability are; the teacher must always support and give students many motivations, teachers can consider of using questioning strategy to encourage students to be active, participated, competitive, and brave. It gives more joyful to have new impressions or experiences. Finally, it can be concluded that questioning strategy is effective media in teaching English readingin junior high school, especially for the second grade students of MTs Sultan AgungJabalsari Tulungagung. ix

Kata Kunci: reading comprehension, questioning strategy Membaca adalah proses dari teks tertulis untuk memahami isi dari teks tersebut. Membaca sangat penting bagi semua orang khususnya bagi para murid. Salah satu metode yang menarik yang membuat para murid merasa santai dalam reading class adalah questioning strategy. Questioning strategy adalah teknik yang sangat penting dan salah satu cara yang sangat umum dalam pembelajaran untuk menanyakan soal-soal dalam memfasilitasi proses pembelajaran. Selanjutnya, dalam menggunakan metode ini, para murid sangat aktif ketika proses belajar pembelajaran dilakukan. Bentuk penelitian yang digunakan adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) oleh Kemmis and Taggart. Pesertanya adalah murid-murid kelas VIII dari MTs Sulatn Agung Jabalsari Tulungagung. Peneliti bekerjasama dengan guru bahasa inggris untuk mengaplikasikan questioning strategy untuk mengajar reading kepada murid-murid kelas VIII-A MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari. Penelitian tindakan kelas dilakukan dalam 1 bulan dalam semester dua tahun ajaran 2013/2014 pada bulan Mei sanpai bulan Juni. Disana ada 14 murid sebagai subjek penelitian. Terdiri dari 8 laki-laki dan 6 perempuan. Berdasarkan permasalahan tersebut, peneliti bermaksud untuk mengembangkan strategi untuk mendorong siswa untuk memahami sebuahbacaan. Dalam melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas, peneliti menggunakan Kemmis dan Mc Model Teggart ini (Mc Niff, 1988:27). Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas dimulai dari menggambarkan strategi yang direncanakan, diikuti dengan menerapkan strategi yang direncanakan, mengamati pelaksanaan strategi yang direncanakan, dan refleksi atau mengevaluasi efektivitas pelaksanaannya. Strategi ini akan direvisi jika evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa strategi yang diterapkan tidak mencapai hasil yang lebih baik. Dari semua proses dalam cycle 1 dari pertemuan pertama sampai pertemuan ketiga, dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada 5 murid atau 39% dari jumlah murid yang mendapatkan nilai 70. Kemudian peneliti melanjutkan ke cycle 2. Dari cycle 2 mulai dari pertemuan pertama sampai pertemuan ketiga, ada 13 siswa atau 96% dari jumlah siswa yang mendapatkan nilai 70.Kemajuan nilai siswa dari cycle 1 sampai cycle 2 ada 62%. Beberapa kekurangan yang ditemukan di cycle pertama, dapat diperbaiki agar dapat meningkatkan siswa dalam kemampuan pemahaman membaca di pertemuan cycle 2. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, prestasi siswa setelah menggunakan strategibertanyameningkat. Dengan mengamati proses siswa dalam belajar x
11 mambaca dari siklus 1 sampai siklus 2 ada beberapa perkembangan dalam proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran. Beberapa saran yang dapat diberikan untuk meningkatkan kualitas proses yang berkaitan dengan kemampuan membaca siswa belajar mengajar adalah; guru harus selalu mendukung dan memberikan siswa banyak motivasi, guru dapatmempertimbangkandenganmenggunakanstrategibertanyauntukmendorong siswa untuk aktif, berpartisipasi, kompetitif, dan berani. Ini memberikan kesan dan pengalaman baru. Akhirnya dapat disimpulkan bahwa strategi bertanya merupakan media yang efektif digunakan dalam mengajar mambaca untuk siswa sekolah menengah pertama (SMP) khususnya untuk siswa MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari Tulungagung kelas satu.
