2 Section I Listening and Responding 20 marks This section should take approximately 50 minutes Part A 10 marks Attempt Question 1 You will hear ONE text. The text will be read twice. There will be a two-minute pause after the first reading in which you may make notes. However, you may make notes at any time. After the second reading you will have 12 minutes to answer Question 1. Write your answers in ENGLISH in the spaces provided. These spaces provide guidance for the expected length of response. In the case of multiple-choice questions, tick the box that corresponds to the correct response. There will be a warning after 10 minutes to indicate that you have two minutes left to complete your answers. 13 Question 5 (continued) Masih Indonesiakah Kita? Setelah belasan tahun tinggal di luar negeri, baru-baru ini saya berkunjung ke Indonesia untuk temu-kangen dengan para sahabat lama. Saya benar-benar kagum akan berbagai kemajuan yang telah dicapai Indonesia sejak saya meninggalkan Indonesia. Namun saya juga heran, kenapa sekarang bahasa asing dan gaya luar negeri demikian merajalela di Indonesia? Nama anak-anak Indonesia jaman sekarang banyak yang aneh-aneh dan tidak terdengar Indonesia sama sekali. Nama tempat, mulai dari rumah makan sampai pekuburan, pelbagai produk barang dan jasa, banyak yang memakai bahasa asing. Dunia bisnis mal, toserba, pasar swalayan dan dunia pendidikan, khususnya perguruan tinggi, juga bergelimang dengan istilah-istilah bahasa asing. Kalau memang belum ada padanan bahasa Indonesianya, itu bisa dimaklumi. Tapi, kebanyakan hanya karena ingin dianggap gagah. Busana dan arsitektur juga bergaya sok asing. Asing dalam arti hanya penampilan luarnya saja, bukan isi atau bobotnya. Kesenian dan kebudayaan tradisional hanya digemari para lansia atau wisatawan manca negara. Kawula muda Indonesia lebih menggemari semua yang serba asing karena ingin dianggap modern atau maju. Kebanggaan akan semua-semua yang Indonesia hanya retorik yang jauh berbeda dari kenyataan di lapangan. Beberapa teman mengatakan tak usah kuatir karena ini kan gejala kota metropolitan. Tapi saya melihat tren kuat di mana kota-kota besar meniru ibukota. Dan kota kecil mati-matian meniru kota besar. Kemudian desa-desa berlomba-lomba mencoba meniru kota. Cepat atau lambat semuanya nanti akan berwajah sama dan serupa. Gejala inilah yang membuat saya prihatin dan kecewa. Jadi di antara berbagai kemajuan yang telah dicapai Indonesia yang membuat kita sangat bangga, harus kita sadari bahwa banyak juga yang hilang. Bagi saya ini menyedihkan karena saya menginginkan Indonesia yang maju tetapi tetap berpenampilan dan berjiwa Indonesia. End of Question 5 Please turn over 13
