THE EFFECT OF SALINITY ON DISTRIBUTION OF SETTLING VELOCITY OF COLLOID PARTICLES (A Case Study On Banjir Kanal Timur Estuary, Semarang) ABSTRACT Estuary is a place where a river meets the sea and become a place for settlement of fine particles such as colloid from domestic and industrial wastes, and organic decayed that carried by the river. This colloid settlement and transport process are influenced by salinity of sea water, particle properties and stream hydrodynamic. In this research the writers will be examined the influence of sea water salinity and stream hydrodynamics on velocity distribution of colloid particle settlement in estuary of Banjir Kanal Timur, Semarang. Dynamic model of colloid sediment is based on equations of water hydrodynamic and momentum, and salt and colloid continuities. The 1-DH transport model of colloid sediment had predicted by assumptions that driven from unsteady flow equation of St.Venant; where its numerical solutions carried out by finite difference method, its implicitly carried out by hydrodynamic equation of Abbot-Ionescu method, and it is explicitly carried out by equations of salt continuity and colloid sediment transport of Upwind method. The results had drawn from this research are as bellows: 1. Sea water salinity from 1,5 %o or more has an influence on velocity distribution of colloid particle settlement. 2. Settling velocity of colloid particle on 230 mg/1 concentration is 0.28 S 0,09 and on concentration of 110 mg/1 is 0.11 S -1. 3. The 1-DH model of colloid sediment transport can be applied to determine transport pattern of colloid sediment that its settling velocity influenced by salinity. 4. Distribution of settling velocity of colloid sediment is influenced by tidal flow pattern. 5. Flux of sediment deposit that influenced by salinity is 0,054 g/m 2 /hr and that without salinity influence is 0,015 g/m 2 /hr.
