Cultural Note Most Indonesians take two baths each day. One bath is taken in the morning and the other in the evening. A bath does not necessarily mean a full immersion into a bathtub; instead, a bath in Indonesia may consist of retrieving water with a dipper from a cistern and then pouring it over one s body. The majority of Indonesians have a simple toilet called a kakus. It consists of a hole in the floor of the bathroom where one squats to use it. Water is then poured down the hole when one is finished. Wealthy Indonesian families and most hotels in Indonesia have Westerntype toilets. 136

Grammar Note The suffix an is used to indicate the item that is being acted upon or the result of an action. Here are some examples: makan (to eat) makanan (food or meal) minum (to drink) -- minuman (beverage or drinks) The question word dimana means where is, and it is used to ask for directions. Here is an example: Dimana kamar mandi? Where is the bathroom? Unlike in English, the to be verb adalah is not used in Indonesian when the question word dimana is used. 4. Below is a chart with rooms you would find in a typical home. Under each room, list the furniture and furnishings (from the list above) that you would expect to find there.
