So when it comes to hard drive storage space, think big!) If you don t have enough free hard disk space on your computer, then you ll need to buy an external hard drive to store all your photos (don t worry, Lightroom will still manage all your images, you re just storing them on a separate hard drive. You ll learn how to set this all up in the next few pages). For Laptop Users: If you primarily use a laptop computer for editing your images, then I would definitely recommend using an
external hard drive to store your photo library because of the limited hard disk space on most laptops. Think about it. You re going to need to manage literally thousands (or tens of thousands) of images, and your laptop is going to get really full, really fast (believe me, it gets there faster than you d think), so using an external drive (they re surprisingly inexpensive these days) has become the choice for many photographers using Lightroom. (You can find 500-GB external hard drives for around $80 these days, but if you can spend just a little more [around $110], go for the now popular 1-TB [terabyte] drives, which hold 1,000 GB.) Next, Do This: Set Up Your Folder Organization (It s Really Important) Lightroom can do a brilliant job of keeping you organized, as long as you start out being organized, and that means sticking to this one simple, but critical, rule: keep all your photos inside one main folder. It doesn t matter how many other folders you have inside that main folder, just make sure all your photos reside within it. This is the key ingredient to making everything work smoothly. If, instead, you import photos from folders in different locations all over your computer, you re headed for trouble. Here s how to set things up right from the start: Step One: As you read above, our goal is to get all our photos inside one main folder, right? Well, if you decided to store all your photos on your computer, then the rest is pretty easy. By default, Lightroom automatically chooses your Pictures (or My Pictures) folder as your main photo folder, and when you go to import photos from a memory card, it will automatically choose that folder for you. However, I m going to recommend doing one extra thing now to make your life much easier:
go inside your Pictures folder, create a new empty folder, and name it My Lightroom Photos (you don t have to name it that exactly, but just to make things consistent here in the book, that s what I ve named my main folder). That way, when that day comes when you run out of hard disk space (and it will come way sooner than you might imagine), you can move, copy, or back up your entire photo library by simply moving one folder your My Lightroom Photos folder. This is one of those things that if you do it now, there will come a day when it will save you not just hours, but literally days, worth of work. Step Two: If you already have folders full of photos on your computer, before you start importing them into Lightroom, you ll want to drag-and-drop those folders inside your My Lightroom Photos folder. That way, all your photos reside inside that one My Lightroom Photos folder before you import them into Lightroom. Although it doesn t seem like it now, again, it s amazing how this one little bit of organization will make your life that much easier down the road. If you choose to store your photos on an external hard drive, then you ll set things up pretty much the same way (that s in the next step). Step Three: On your external hard drive, just create a
new folder, name it My Lightroom Photos (or whatever you d like), then drag-anddrop any photos on your computer that you want managed by Lightroom into that My Lightroom Photos folder on your external drive. Of course, keep them in their original folders when you drag-anddrop them over into your My Lightroom Photos folder (after all, you don t want to just drag-and-drop thousands of photos into one big empty folder). Do all this before you start importing them into Lightroom (which we ll talk about in detail on the next page, along with how to tell Lightroom how to use that new folder you created to store all your imported photos).
