Abstract The research concentrates the study on several one dimensional non linear consolidation theories offully saturated clays, develo by Terzaghi 's linear theory ( 1925), Davis and Raymond's non linear theory (1965), finite non linear theory due to Gibson's et al. (1967) and Laing Barden's theological model theory (1965). The results are also compared with Terzaghi consolidation theory. Terzaghi 's linear theory assumes that the coefficient of permeability, compressibility and consolidation are constants by assuming small strain condition; observed at primary consolidation and for small load increment ratios (o Jay';=1) so that U a =50%then T, 0,197 and at Ua =90%then T =0,848 Davis and Raymond's non linear theory was developed by assuming the coefficient of consolidation to be constant while the compressibility and permeability were both allowed to decrease with increasing pressure by assuming small strain condition; observed at primary consolidation and for high ratios offinal to initial effective pressure(6,6 ', > 1), the pore pressure in a normally consolidated soil can be expected to be considerably higher at any particular time than that predicted by the Terzaghi theory. The study gives results of U av =50% at T v = 0,197 and U a,= 90% at T v = 0,848. Finite non linear theory in accordance with Gibson's et al. assumes that the coefficient of permeability and compressibility vary by assuming finite strain condition; observed at primary consolidation and for larger pressure increment ratios (o /a'; > 1). The study gives results of U m, = 50% at T o = 0,049 and U av = 90% at T o = 0,212. Laing Barden's theory assumes that non linear consolidation with rheological model consisting of linear Hookean spring and non linear Newton doshpot where in this theory the consolidation process is governed by deformability parameters( a,b,n), coefficient of permeability k, porosity n, thickness of the layer and by the load increment. The results of computations for power law index (n) = 5 and ratio of dimensionless time factor governing the diffusion process and dimensionless time factor associated with the structural viscosity (R=T/Ts ) = 0,0001, when U av 50% and U av 90% are given for T = 0,47 and T = 2, 79. This theory shows that secondary consolidation is small and of short duration and it is assumed to start after the excess pore water pressure at the mid plane falls below an arbitrary value of u= 0, 01 as For high ratios offinal to initial effective pressure (6'/a ' ; > 1), non linear theory assumes that the pore pressure behaviour in a normally consolidated soil can be expected to be considerably higher at any particular time than that predicted by the Terzaghi theory. For small load increment ratios (6,6-'; 1), non linear theory predicts that the pore pressure behaviour would approach Terzaghi theory.
