ABSTRAK Salah satu tujuan pembuatan film adalah untuk menghibur masyarakat. Selain untuk menghibur, film juga mengandung fungsi lain, yaitu, untuk menyampaikan nilai-nilai hidup manusia. Salah satu film yang berusaha untuk menyampaikan nilai-nilai hidup manusia adalah Hugo. Film ini menceritakan seorang anak yatim-piatu benama Hugo yang berusaha sangat keras untuk memperbaiki sebuah robot, yang merupakan satu-satunya peninggalan ayahnya. Usaha keras Hugo sebagai yatim piatu untuk tetap betahan hidup dan tidak merasa kesepian membawa dia kepada serangkaian cerita malang. Didalam skripsi ini, penulis mengajak pembaca menguji dan mengetahui Hugo lebih dalam dan lebih baik dengan menggunakan Pendekatan Formalistic. Ada dua penemuan pada analisa ini. Yang pertama, penulis menemukan bahwa tema dari Hugo adalah tentang perjuangan yang mana dihadapi oleh karakter-karakter utamanya. Melalui pendeskripsian dan penjelasan peristiwa-peristiwa, penulis membuktikan bahwa karakter-karakter beerjuang didalam hidup mereka. Simbol-simbol didalam film juga menggambarkan perjuangan meraka. Yang kedua, penulis membandingkan pengalaman jatuh bangunnya hidup kedua karakter utama bernama Hugo dan George Melies didalam mengejar cita-cita mereka. x
