ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Many numerical studies on finite element method have been done by others to find out the behavior of reinforced concrete structures. Concrete cracking and slip between concrete and steel bar are fundamental problems of reinforced concrete structures. Development of finite element method by inserting cracks and slips is one the method to find out the behavior of reinforced concrete structures through numerical simulation. Usually, cracks are modeled by smeared or discrete crack model. In smeared crack a cracked element is assumed as a continuum with a change in material behavior from one of isotropic to another orthotropic character. While in discrete crack, a crack is modeled as a node separation on the side of adjacent elements when principle tensile stresses of nodes have reached the tensile strength of concrete. Although using discrete crack has a consequence to change the topology, it is recognized to be able to represent strain discontinuity of the structure. Unfortunately, the node separation from one node to adjacent node on the side of element is not the same with a true direction of crack, and it is also causing overestimate of the crack propagation. In this study, a new model was developed to simulate crack, where cracks are modeled with proper combination of discrete cracks and smeared cracks. Discrete cracks are inserted into the structure when the principle tensile stresses of nodes have reached the tensile strength of concrete. Insertion of discrete cracks' into structure is only performed when resulting stress combinations are dominated by normal tension stress. Nevertheless, if the principle tension stress on a Gauss point has exceeded the tensile strength of concrete, crack is treated
as a smeared crack with a change in material behavior from one of isotropic to another orthotropic character. To find the true direction and the pattern of cracks, insertion of discrete cracks into structure is not only performed by node separation at nodes which have reached the tensile strength of concrete, but also rotate the crack perpendicular to the direction of the principle tension stress and drags the crack-tip node as far as the crack has propagated Bond slip effect in finite element is also modeled by different methods of previous studies. It is included into reinforcement stiffness of the rest embedded element behind the slip. Before a crack crosses a reinforcing bar, the behavior of bond between concrete and bars is considered as full bonded. When a crack crosses a reinforcing bar, tension stresses released by the concrete are entirely carried by the reinforcement, therefore tensile stress in the steel increase, lead to slip between concrete and the reinforcing bar at the crack-gap followed by debonding zone along slip length at the right and the left crack The slip also reduces bond mechanism on embedded reinforcement at behind slip. The reinforcing bar in the crack-gap along debonded length is considered as a naked bar element by inserting a new steel-element. To simulate the bond slip effect in finite element analysis, a reduction factor is included into the reinforcement stiffness behind slip. However, the reduction of stress on the embedded reinforcement element at behind the slip is more accurate for reinforced concrete structures with under-reinforced condition. On the other hand, the embedded reinforcement element at behind the slip for reinforced concrete structures with over-reinforced condition, is remain treated as full-bonded condition. A Special Finite Element computer program is written for application purposes of this model. Various cases of reinforced concrete beam structures were analyzed and the results were then compared to those obtained from experimental testing and numerical analysis of previous studies to verify the accuracy of the model. Application of the model was able to shows realistic and
