I am 55 years old. I come from Purwokerto. 1 Interviewer: What do you do? Tuminah: I work (as a housekeeper) for Mrs. Sahinah s family. Interviewer: How long have you been working here? Tuminah: I ve been working here for 12 years. Interviewer: Oh okay. You come from Purwokerto, don t you? Tuminah: Yes. Interviewer: (Purwokerto is) in Java, 2 isn t it? Tuminah: Yes, it is in Java, Banyumas. 3 Interviewer: Ohhh, Banyumas Bayu 4, were you born there? Tuminah: [I was born] in Purwokerto. Interviewer: And did you grow up there as well? Tuminah: Yes, I did, in Purwokerto. Interviewer: Ooo Bayu, when did you come to Jakarta? Tuminah: I ve been here for 12 years and I m currently staying with Mrs. Sahinah. Interviewer: 12 years. Bayu, why did you come to Jakarta? 1 Purwokerto is a small city in Indonesia. It is located in Central Java. 2 Java is the most populous island in Indonesia. 3 Banyumas is a small district in Indonesia. The biggest city in Banyumas district is Purwokerto. 4 Bayu is a word for calling an older woman. This word is adapted from Javanese language.

Tuminah: My first husband passed away, and my second husband chose another woman, so I stayed with my child, from Cilacap. 1 Interviewer: Oh, does Bayu have any children? Tuminah: Yes, a son. Interviewer: Do you have grandchildren? Tuminah: Yes, I have six grandchildren. Interviewer: Bayu, when you were child, did you go to school? Tuminah: I didn t go to school. They asked me to go to school, but I did not want to. Interviewer: You did not want to. Tuminah: Yes (laughing). Interviewer: Uh... well Bayu, what do you do in Mrs. Sahinah s house? Tuminah: Every morning I do some cleaning, floor-sweeping, mopping, and then I cook for the children and also for the Mister [and the food will be] brought to his office. Interviewer: So Bayu likes to cook? Tuminah: Yes, I like to cook. Interviewer: Um what food, what food do you cook? Tuminah: The food... zucchini, peanuts, eggplants, spinach, and also long beans, and then fish... various kinds of fish. Interviewer: Oh... what kinds of ingredient do you use? Tuminah: The ingredients, the ingredients... well... garlic, shallot... chili... (laughing)... tomato (covering her mouth) if I made gudeg, 2 for gudeg [I d use] pepper, coriander, ginger, turmeric, garlic, shallot, tomato. Interviewer: Ooo... do you use all the things [you have mentioned]? Tuminah: Yes, I use all of them. 1 Cilacap is a small city in Indonesia. It is located in central Java. 2 Gudeg is traditional food from Central Java. It is made from jackfruit mixed with coconut milk, ingredients, and lots of sugar. It is cooked for hours until the color of jackfruit changed to be dark brown.

Interviewer: Bayu, where did you learn how to cook? Tuminah: Was... when I was in Purwokerto, I learned from my parents, but here in... Jakarta, I learned from Nano. Interviewer: Oh, okay... and... Bayu... umm do you like to cook for your grandchildren? Tuminah: Yes I do... for my grandchildren. Interviewer: Bayu, are you a Muslim? Tuminah: Yes I am. My religion is Islam. Interviewer: Islam Tuminah: Yes Interviewer: When you were a child, did you learn about your religion? Tuminah: Yes, I learned religious things. I read the (Qur an 1 ) with my friends. Interviewer: Where did you learn? Tuminah: In mosques. Interviewer: Oohh... and during a festival in Islam, the big festival is Idul Adha, 2 isn t it? Tuminah: Yes it is... yes. Interviewer: Did Bayu go back home (on Idul Adha)? Tuminah: Yes, I went back home. Interviewer: In your village, what kind of food do you have for Idul Adha? Tuminah: Bening soup, 3 gulai, 4 ketupat, 1 and also rice crackers, there are banana chips, well, plenty kinds of food. 1 Qur an is Islam s bible. It is written in Arabic alphabet which is not Indonesian alphabet. That s why Muslims in Indonesia should learn how to read Qur an. 2 Idul adha is Hajj (pilgrimage) celebration day. In this day Muslims sacrifice cattle and distribute the cattle s meat to the poor. 3 Bening in Indonesia means clear. Bening soup is a soup not using coconut milk and also not using animal broth. It is a kind of vegetable broth soup. The contents of the soup are spinach, tomato, and sweet corn. 4 Gulai is a beef soup mixed with coconut milk. The dishes use many kinds of ingredients and the taste is almost similar to curry.

Interviewer: Bayu... um... in... Do Indonesians eat lots of rice? Tuminah: Yes, a lot of rice, in the morning they eat rice, in the afternoon rice, in the evening rice, they don t eat bread. Interviewer: [They] aren t similar to Americans, are they? Tuminah: No, they re not. Interviewer: Eat rice. Tuminah: Yes, eat rice. Interviewer: On Idul Fitri, 2 are the food served similar to the food on Idul Adha? Tuminah: Yes, it s similar, well... pretty similar. Interviewer: Hmmm... do you like fish? Do you like beef? Tuminah: I eat beef, but only a little. I eat fish. Interviewer: (interrupt) lot of fish. Tuminah: Yes, yes. Interviewer: Oh and Bayu, can you make food from other provinces? Tuminah: From other provinces, just a little Interviewer: (Are the foods) different? Tuminah: Yes, (the foods are) different. Interviewer: Well... food is Padang s 3 [food] different from Javanese food? Tuminah: Yes, it s different from Javanese food. Interviewer: How it is different? Tuminah: The ingredients in Padang food, I never... make any [Padang food]. 1 Ketupat is a rice cake snack cooked in a small container of woven young coconut leaves. 2 Idul fitri is the end of fasting month celebration day. During the fasting month, adult Muslims are prohibited to eating and drinking since sunrise until sunset. But in this Idul Fitri Muslims are prohibited from fasting. In Indonesia, Idul fitri is a long holiday. Schools and offices will close at least for one week. 3 Padang is a city in Sumatra Island. This city is very famous with its food. The food is really spicy, using lots of chili and dense coconut milk.

Interviewer: Bu... are the ingredients different? Tuminah: Yes, the ingredients are different, maybe they re different. If I come to Jakarta, what would I do? This is what I do... work at home. Interviewer: And when... when you were child, what did you want to be? Tuminah: I wanted to be nothing... (She laughs while covering her mouth) Interviewer: Did you only play around? Tuminah: Yes, I only played around with other children... others... [we] played Interviewer: What did you play? Tuminah: played (laughing)... reading (Qur an)... yes, reading (laughing again) at well mosques, at much small mosques with my friends, well. Every Sunday or every Saturday at the mosque. Interviewer: Oh. Tuminah: Playing and also reading (the Qur an) Interviewer: And for your future, what do you expect Bayu? Tuminah: I want to play with my grandchildren. Interviewer: Do you want go back home to your grandchildren? Tuminah: (laughing) yes... with my grandchildren... Interviewer: Okay... thank you Bayu... Tuminah: You re welcome.
