Ananta: ammh aku enggak Defira: saya sempet belajar..amhh bahasa Indonesia, ada dua tahun. Interviewer: dua tahun ini temen-temennya atau kamu? Yang temen-temen luar negeri, mereka bahasa belajar bahasa Indonesia? Ananta: di sekolah di offer bahasa spanyol, bahasa Perancis, bahasa Jepang, Korea, Dutch, sama.kayaknya bahasa China baru dimulai tahun ini, kalau aku ambil bahasa Perancis Interviewer: ambil bahasa Perancis English translation: Ananta: Umm... My name is Ananta. I am 18 years old. I m currently in senior high school, and I m almost finished. Defira: I My name is Defira, 18 years old, (I am) I... (in) university. Interviewer: Ooh... good morning... um where do you come from? Ananta: From Indonesia. Defira: From Indonesia, I stay in Jakarta. Interviewer: Stay in Jakarta Ananta: But, both of us are Chinese Indonesians. Interviewer: Chinese Indonesians... but now you re in school. What school do you go to? Ananta: Uh... JIS, Jakarta International School, and... Defira: I am at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Interviewer: Okay... and your parents, what do your parents do? Ananta: Ehhmmm... my family works at uh... a department store... make clothes... Interviewer: A kind of textile business? Ananta: Uh... no.

Interviewer: (interrupts) or... Ananta: Retail. Interviewer: Retail... what about you? Defira: Ah... my father works on various things. Interviewer: But it is a business... or... Defira: Yes, business. Interviewer: Okay... hmmhh... How long... hmhh... have you been in this school? Ananta: Ummm... I moved to JIS, in grade nine, so it s been four years. Interviewer: Four years, what about you? Defira: Uhh... I... This is my first year in university. Interviewer: Ah... and did you go to this senior high school? Defira: Yes, I attended JIS high school for six years. Interviewer: Six years... uh... Why don t you go to public school... for example, an Indonesian public school? Why do you go to an international school? Ananta: Umm... since I was a child I studied in international schools. That s why my Indonesian is bad, [I am] much better in English, um and... when I started high school, I moved here. Defira: Um... I moved here... that time I came from Singapore... so... it was an international school in Singapore... so I m used to being in international school. That s why I enrolled here. Interviewer: So, you have lots of friends from abroad, do you? Defira: Um... yes... Interviewer: In this school? Defira: Yes. Ananta: Yes... ummm... usually my friends here who are close to me, come from New Zealand, some of them from India... but the majority comes from United States of

America... they are foreigners children, so their parents work for companies. That s why they re sent to this school. Interviewer: Okay... do they speak Indonesian? Ananta: Yes, if I spoke Indonesian to them, they d understand, but... they d reply in English. Interviewer: Reply in English... Ananta: Yes. Interviewer: But do you learn the Indonesian language at school? Ananta: Um... I don t. Defira: I learned... um... Indonesian, for... two years... Interviewer: Two years... you or your friends? Your foreign friends, do they learn Indonesian? Ananta: The school offers courses in Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, and Chinese just started this year... as for me, I took French.
