ABSTRACT One of the important factors in our daily communication is language choice. Through the language choice, we will know the social role of the participants in a conversation. Besides, we also know the closeness of relationship between the participants. When we live in multilingual society, of course there are more than one language that is used. In this research, the writer observed the language used in daily conversations done by the students and lecturers at the Faculty of Language and Arts Soegijapranata Catholic University Semarang. Therefore, the writer chooses the Sociolinguistics approach because language choice or code choice is a part of Sociolinguistics subject. The purpose of this study is to discover the kind and the styles of the language, and also to describe the context in which informal language is used by the Faculty of Language and Arts students while conversing with their lecturers. The method of this study is qualitative research because the writer used recorder to record the conversations among the respondents to get the data in natural settings, which was spontaneous. The participants were 15 students from 2011 academic year and 9 fulltime lecturers in this faculty. The result of this study shows that there are three kinds of language used by the lecturers and students. The languages are English, Indonesian, and Javanese. There are two styles of language. They are formal and informal styles. But, both students and lecturers mostly used informal Indonesian and informal Javanese language in their daily conversations and they usually used informal style to show their feelings (the context is inner context).
