ABSTRACT Didimu was born on May 10, 1942. His father, Timothy Mwenekanyonyo Mwamalopa Arinani Chikowoka Kayira, and his mother, Ziya Nyakawonga, were members of the Tumbuka tribe in the small hill village of Mpale in the Karonga district of northern Nyasaland, which at the time was a British protectorate federated with Rhodesia. They were poor and illiterate. His father had never learned a trade and owned no cows, so the family ate from their 20 acre garden. Although living in a poor family, Didimu had a great dream. He dreamed to reach education as high as he could. He thought that the education was the only way to got his family out from poverty. Finally, he decided to go to America although he went there without any good preparations. In this thesis, the writer focuses in analyzing the development of Didimu s personality in several steps based on age. The writer also reveals about the role of environments which really affects his personality development. Psychosocial theory by Erik. H Erikson will be applied in this thesis. Viewing from it, the personality of Didimu was developed normally. There are some environments which really help Didimu to develop his personality. They are Family, USIS (United States Information services), Skagit Valley College, and University of Washington.
ABSTRAK Didimu dilahirkan pada tanggal 10 Mei 1942. Ayahnya, Timothy Mwenekanyonyo Mwamalopa Arinani Chikowoka Kayira, dan ibunya, Ziya Nyakawonga adalah anggota suku Tumbuka di desa perbukitan kecil Mpale di Karonga wilayah Nyasaland utara, yang pada saat itu merupakan daerah perlindungan Inggris beserikat dengan Rhodesia. Mereka adalah orang miskin dan buta huruf. Ayahnya tidak pernah diajarkan suatu perdagangan dan tidak memiliki sapi, jadi keluarganya hidup dari 20 acre kebun. Walaupun hidup di sebuah keluarga miskin, Didimu mempunyai impian yang luar biasa. Dia bermimpi untuk mendapatkan pendidikan setinggi-tingginya. Dia berpikir bahwa pendidikan adalah satusatunya jalan untuk membawa keluarganya keluar dari kemiskinan. Akhirnya, dia memutuskan untuk pergi ke Amerika walaupun tanpa persiapan yang bagus. Pada tesis ini, penulis memfokuskan untuk menganalisa perkembangan kepribadian Didimu dalam beberapa langkah berdasarkan usia. Penulis juga mengupas tentang peran dari lingkungan sekitar yang sangat mempengaruhi perkembangan kepribadiannya. Teori Psychosocial dari Erik. H Erikson akan diaplikasikan pada tesis ini. Melihat dari teori itu, kepribadian Didimu berkembang secara normal. Disana terdapat beberapa lingkungan yang sangat membantu Didimu untuk mengembangkan kepribadiannya. Mereka adalah keluarga, USIS (Pelayanan Informasi untuk USA), Perguruan tinggi Skagit Valley, dan Universitas Washington.
