ABSTRACT Karya tulis yang berjudul A Brief Description of Writing Personal Letters ini menguraikan tentang cara penulisan surat dalam bentuk tidak formal dalam bahasa Inggris. Surat menyurat merupakan salah satu kegiatan bahasa yang dilakukan dengan interaksi tulis. Dengan demikian kegiatan surat menyurat memiliki peranan sebagai alat komunikasi tertulis yang dirasakan semakin penting dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat dewasa ini. Meski dapat dilihat, perkembangan teknologi yang semakin canggih tidak menenggelamkan fungsi surat khususnya. Melalui surat pribadi ini kita dapat mengungkapkan perasaan kita secara pribadi kepada keluarga, sahabat,seseorang yang disayangi dan lain-lain. Adapun tujuan dari penulisan karya tulis ini yaitu untuk mengetahui cara dan tahap-tahap dalam menulis surat pribadi dalam bahasa Inggris serta untuk membantu orang khususnya para mahasiswa ataupun murid dalam menulis surat pribadi berbahasa Inggris sehingga dapat memperbaiki kemampuan mereka dalam menulis surat. Dalam proses penulisan, penulis menggunakan metode kepustakaan, dengan mengumpulkan buku-buku yang berhubungan dengan topic tulisan sebagai bahan referensi. Pada bab 1 dalam karya tulis ini, penulis menguraikan latar belakang masalah, batasan masalah, tujuan penulisan, manfaat penulisan, dan metode penulisan. Bab 2 berisi tentang penjelasan singkat mengenai surat secara umum, baik defenisinya, tujuan menulis surat, dan kerangka surat secara umum. Sedangkan Bab 3, karya tulis ini berisi tentang penjelasan singkat mengenai surat pribadi, termasuk tujuan penulisan surat pribadi, bagian-bagian dari surat pribadi, bahasa surat, dan contoh-contoh surat pribadi. Bab 4 berisi mengenai kesimpulan dan saran dari karya tulis ini. Jadi, surat pribadi adalah surat yang ditulis secara pribadi untuk mengekspresikan perasaan kita secara pribadi kepada keluarga, teman, orang yang disayangi dan lainnya.
