The air force operates a mixed fleet including Su-27, Su-30, Hawk 100 and 200s, and the F-16, and the experience that Jakarta had in operating the older Sukhoi designs was touted as the reasoning for selecting the Su-35. However, this deal has not run smoothly, with a barter agreement in place to finance the deal, and sanctions from the US government over sales with Russia having complicated it further, so buying Western designs could provide Indonesia with an easy route to expanding the fleet. A number of OEMs have expressed an interest in pitching for fighter requirements expected to emerge, including Saab, which would be willing to team locally to provide an offering with industrial benefits, and BAE Systems, which would offer the newer version of the Hawk, or if it met the criteria, even the Eurofighter Typhoon. Lockheed Martin is delivering a mid-life upgrade on 10 of the F-16s in service with the IAF, Randy Howard, programme lead for the company, told the Show Daily, and an additional 24 of the type have been transferred from the US government s former fleet, representing a sizeable amount of the total fighter force. The company would offer the Block 70/72 F-16V (Viper) with capabilities including an AESA radar for any new-build sales, Howard said: We believe that Indonesia is looking to further recapitalise its fighter fleet, and the F-16 Block 70/72 would be a suitable fit for this, he explained. The F-16 is uniquely qualified for this geopolitical environment that Indonesia faces. Howard noted that the F-16V would fulfil air-toground, air-to-air and sea search requirements suited to the air force, and would benefit from radar technology that is common with that found on the F-35. He also emphasised that it would add commonality with the growing fleet. We know how to work with Indonesian industry, Howard added. 3 3 SMASH and grab BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Turkish company Aselsan (Hall A, Stand A50R) is promoting its SMASH 30mm remote-controlled stabilised naval gun system in the region as the main armament of coastal craft or as a secondary armament of larger surface craft. The version on display at Indo Defence is armed with the US Northrop Grumman, Armament Systems (previously ATK Armament Systems) 30mm Bushmaster MK44 dual-feed cannon, with two magazines each holding 75 rounds of ready-use ammunition. The MK44 cannon has been built in large numbers for land and naval applications, but other weapons could be fitted, according to UAVs fly in from Vietnam BY BETH STEVENSON Vietnamese company Viettel (Hall B, Stand B095) is preparing to deliver its hybridpowered fixed-wing UAV to its domestic navy as of next month, and has a development plan to expand the capability of the aircraft into a longendurance, weaponised platform. Viettel is here showing for the first time outside Vietnam the Shikra, which is a 26kg UAV with a 3.25m wingspan that takes off vertically before transitioning into horizontal flight. The Vietnamese navy plans to begin operating Shikra from land, but it is expected that it will eventually expand this to ship-based operations, enabled by the vertical take-off and landing electric motors on the UAV. This variant has a two-hour endurance, but the company is planning the development of two more versions, one with a 5-6m wingspan that will be able to operate for 10 hours, and one with a 20m wingspan that will be able to operate for 20 hours at ranges up to 150km. Shikra and the mid-sized system have lineof-sight operations, while the larger one will be satellite communications controlled and fully autonomous. Additionally, the larger version Aselsan SMASH remote-controlled stabilised naval gun system is armed with the US 30mm Bushmaster MK44 dual-feed cannon will be able to carry weapons, while the smaller versions are surveillance UAVs. The largest one is entering development now, and will be ready by 2022, Than Hoang Ha, sales executive for the company s Viettel Aerospace Institute, told the Show Daily. Newer versions will have a new composite structure and more efficient powerplants, he added, noting that all of the design work is Vietnamese. The company also has its Hummer quadcopter UAV on display, a system with a one-hour endurance, 10km range and 1kg payload capacity. Aselsan. The stabilised independent sensor pod is mounted externally on the right side and includes a thermal camera, day camera, and laser rangefinder and an automatic tracker is also provided. Traverse is 360 when a slip ring is fitted and elevation is from -15 to +55 at 60 / second. The weapon is laid onto target by the gunner using a flat-panel display but it can also have automatic slew to targets assigned from the ship s C3 system or target designator. In addition to the actual mount and its associated sensor package and operator s station, other key elements include the gun control unit, fire control computer, gun interface unit, inclinometer, servo controller, slip ring, batteries and associated charging unit. As easy as ABC Cleaning the barrel of a cannon cannot be easier than the automatic bore cleaner (ABC System) developed by South Korea s SooSung Defense Industries (SDI; Hall D, Stand D240I). Unlike the manual method of using a steel brush at the end of a long pole pulled by a number of personnel, the ABC System provides a clean result in a short period of time. It requires only one operator, who can do the job from outside or inside the tank, which further enhances the safety of personnel, especially in hostile or NBC-contaminated environments. Small steel brushes clipped into the outer surface of the ABC cleaner lock into each groove of the barrel. When the operation starts, the cleaner unit is pulled along the entire length of the barrel at the rate of about 2m per minute, all the while spraying cleaning lubricant as it follows the curve. Afterwards the steel brushes are replaced with cotton brushes for a perfect clean. This ensures high shooting accuracy and maximum utilisation of barrel life, because the automatic cleaning process leaves no residue. For the 105mm smoothbore, the process is essentially the same. The ABC system is available for a range of calibres, including RB-76 and RB-127 navy guns, RB-155 artillery barrels and RB-105 smoothbore tank guns.

4 4 Charting new waters BY RICHARD SCOTT With a vast archipelago to safeguard, the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Laut (TNI-AL)) is continuing its modernisation efforts with the introduction of new submarines, frigates and helicopters. Moreover, President Joko Widodo has put forward a vision of Indonesia as a Global Maritime Axis, intrinsic to which is the modernisation of the nation s maritime defence capability. All this is occurring against the backdrop of China s increasingly muscular presence in regional waters, and its accelerated construction of artificial islands across sea areas it claims in the South China Sea. Although Indonesia is not a claimant to the South China Sea disputes, Beijing s unilaterally declared nine-dashed line demarcation overlaps with Jakarta s claim for an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) around the Natuna Islands cluster. Also, Chinese fishermen have been increasingly accused of encroaching into Indonesian territorial waters. Some of these alleged encroachments have resulted in highprofile collisions involving agencies such as the China Coast Guard and the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. The single most important naval acquisition programme is the introduction of three new DSME 1400 Nagapasa-class diesel-electric The two PKR ships were both delivered in 2017 submarines, which were ordered from South Korean shipbuilder DSME in late First of-class KRI Nagapasa (403) was commissioned in August 2017, with the second boat, KRI Ardadedali (404) handed over at DSME s Okpo yard in April The third boat is currently being built at PT PAL s facilities in Surabaya under a transfer of technology arrangement, with delivery expected in Evolved from the German Type 209/1200 design originally licensed to DSME in the late 1980s, the Nagapasa-class boats are built to the modified DSME 1400 design. 5 undergone refits and upgrades designed to keep them in service through to the mid-2020s. At Indo Defence 2016, the Ministry of Defence s research and development branch revealed it had been working on the design and build of a 22m mini-submarine in conjunction with PT Palindo Marine. The TNI-AL has subsequently indicated that this boat is intended for test and evaluation purposes, and will not join the operational fleet. Indonesia s Minimum Essential Force (MEF) defence modernisation plan had scoped a requirement for a force of 12 submarines by 2024 to address the proliferation of advanced submarines across the region. However, it became public knowledge in early 2018 that this headmark had been scaled back to eight boats, with work now underway to establish final requirements ahead of launching an acquisition programme. Options from Russia, Turkey and France have all been touted. The most notable recent additions to the TNI-AL s surface fleet are the frigates KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata and KRI Gusti Ngurah Rai, both of which were acquired under the Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) programme. Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, as prime contractor, signed a contract in December 2012 for the first ship, with an option for the second exercised in mid Modular construction of the ships, built to the SIGMA design, has been shared between the Vlissingen, Netherlands, facility of Damen Schelde and PT PAL in Surabaya, with final assembly, integration and test performed in Indonesia. The full list comprises the MBDA VL Mica point defence missile system (with space for 12 canistered missiles), the MBDA MM40 Block 3 Exocet surface-to-surface guided weapon, the Rheinmetall Millennium 35mm revolver cannon, Leonardo B515 triple torpedo tubes for A244 lightweight torpedoes, Thales Target Designation Sights, the Thales Vigile 100 electronic support measures system, and the Thales Scorpion jammer. A new class of large surface combatant forces is part of the MEF blueprint. The TNI-AL is currently finalising requirements for a class of up to four ships. As regards naval aviation, the TNI-AL is receiving 11 AS565 MBe Panther helicopters from PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) under a contract signed in Under the terms of the contract, Airbus Helicopters has built the basic AS565 MBe air vehicles at Marignane, France, for delivery to Indonesia. PTDI, acting as design authority, is then taking responsibility for reassembly and outfit of the helicopters in-country at its Bandung facility. This includes the installation of an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) suite co-developed with US-based Rotorcraft Services Group (RSG). The ASW suite developed and integrated by PTDI and RSG includes the L-3 Ocean Systems DS-100 HELRAS dipping sonar, a lightweight torpedo launch system (allowing for release of either Mk 46 or A244/S weapons), and a lightweight operator console. According to RSG, the modular systems design will allow the helicopter to be quickly reconfigured for noncombat roles, including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, medical evacuation, utility and external cargo lift operations. When they become fully operational, the AS565s will be operated by 100 Skuadron Udara, based in Surabaya.

BY BETH STEVENSON Lockheed Martin is in negotiations with the Indonesian government regarding the potential buy of the C-130J Super Hercules to add to the B and H models the air force currently operates. It was revealed in September that the nation s defence minister, Ryamizard Ryacudu, had claimed the air force is looking to acquire five C-130J aircraft in attempt to bring a modern airlift capability into service and further bolster the Hercules fleet, and the manufacturer of the type has confirmed discussions are under way. Lockheed s director of international business development for C-130, Richard Johnston, told the Show Daily that the company is currently working with the government and Ministry of Defence to best determine Indonesia s requirements. Formal documentation regarding the buy Bolstering at-sea capability The Indonesian Navy is investing in new capabilities to either modernise its incumbent vessel fleet or to acquire new systems something which has piqued the interest of Saab (Hall D, Stand 075), which has seen successes in the naval domain in both the domestic and regional markets. The navy is interested in investing in new capabilities to bolster its at-sea capability, and the sales of systems such as Saab s 9LV combat management system (CMS) to Australia and Thailand have shown the company has experience in the region and has proved its technology there. Thailand has additionally acquired the company s Ceros fire control system. Furthermore, Saab provides corvettes to India; corvettes, submarines and mine countermeasure vessels (MCMVs) to Singapore; MCMVs to Japan; and submarines and shipyard capability to Australia. The CMS installation on Australian ships is a particular success for the company, which claims that a retrofit on a legacy vessel is doable, and is something that has been done previously. For us, this is a standard project, Anders Dahl, head of Saab Indonesia, told the Show Daily. Dahl said there is demand in Indonesia for both newbuild and retrofit capabilities, both of which Saab can offer. The RBS 70 short-range air defence system is another possible area of upgrade for Indonesia that Saab could offer a capability the nation has been operating for more than 35 years. The new NG configuration from Saab would upgrade the capability of the system, which includes the addition of an auto-tracker function and a night sight on top of the legacy configuration, and has been previously demonstrated to Indonesia. It also includes a Bolide missile, and would be offered with Saab s Giraffe 1X X-band radar, which would form a man-portable system.

Johnston noted that the legacy fleet of C-130s has proved itself to be the workhorse of the nation s airlift fleet: There s a great deal of interest for the C-130J from the Indonesian government, he explained. The C-130J and the legacy aircraft were put into service here just a few weeks ago after the disaster that happened here, he added, referring to the multinational humanitarian relief effort enforced after an earthquake and tsunami hit the country in September. Johnston noted that the transition from operating the legacy C-130s to the J model is an easy one, and added that the cost avoidance in retaining operations of the same type is tremendous due to the commonality across the different variants. The C-130J is the newest version of the Hercules and is the only model still in production. While externally similar in appearance, the J model features considerably updated technology, including Rolls-Royce AE 2100 D3 turboprops, digital avionics with head-up displays for each pilot, and reduced crew requirements, adding up to improved performance. It is available in standard length or as a stretched -30 variant. Indonesia is the largest operator of the Hercules in the Asia-Pacific region, and is joined by nations including Japan, Thailand, Taiwan and New Zealand in operating fleets of legacy C-130 variants, as well as Australia, India and South Korea, which operate the C-130J. 18 18 BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Scale model of the Nexter VBCI in the IFV configuration Combat-proven In addition to promoting its artillery systems, such as the CAESAR 155mm/52 calibre system in service with the Indonesian Army, Nexter (Hall A, Stand A035) is promoting its combatproven VBCI (8x8) in the region. The French Army has already taken delivery of 630 VBCIs, of which 520 are in the infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) configuration and 110 in the command post (CP) configuration. These have replaced the tracked AMX-10P IFV as the French Army has moved away from tracked vehicles to a mainly wheeled armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) fleet because these have greater strategic mobility and do not require heavy equipment transporters. French Army VBCI IFV versions are fitted with a Nexter one-person turret armed with a 25mm dual-feed cannon and a 7.62mm co-axial machine gun (MG), which can also be laid onto the target by the commander using a stabilised panoramic sighting system. The CP version has a remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS) armed with a.50 MG. Other weapon stations that can be fitted to the VBCI include its own T40 turret, which is armed with the 40mm Case Telescoped Armament System (CTAS), now in production for France and the UK, and a 7.62mm co-axial MG. If required, anti-tank guided weapons (ATGWs) can also be integrated into the T40 turret to enable tanks and other targets to be engaged beyond the range of the 40mm CTAS. For the export market, additional VBCI variants have been proposed by Nexter, including a model with a higher roof line with greater internal volume for more specialised missions such as ambulance or command post vehicle. The production line in Roanne will reopen following the selection of the VBCI by Qatar; 490 vehicles are to be delivered in various configurations. The IFV is to have the Kongsberg Medium Calibre Turret (MCT) armed with a 30mm cannon and a 7.62 mm co-axial MG. NYX, now redesignated the F5032 BY SAM J BASCH Argus Freed from the dark Greece-based Theon Sensors (Hall D, Stand DP035) is showing a range of its monocular and binocular night vision devices at Indo Defence. The company is a regular exhibitor at defence and security exhibitions worldwide. Besides its headquarters in Athens, Theon Sensors has regional offices in Abu Dhabi and Singapore, where it serves the 70,000 devices in service or under contract in 40 different countries. With all Theon systems designed to stringent military standards, the company prides itself on providing high performance and ergonomically advanced devices to increase a soldier s safety and mission success. Theon argues that a benefit of night vision I2 (image intensifiers) is the ability to see the actual picture of the environment, resulting in the ability to accurately recognise and identify people and objects. These systems allow one to read maps, symbols and signs in a unit that is low in weight and power consumption. Following a commercial agreement, the Harris Corporation has added the Theon Sensors NYX dedicated night vision binocular to its portfolio, and it has been given the new designation F5032 lightweight night vision binocular.

20 BY BETH STEVENSON Deliveries of an initial batch of an upgraded version of the Indonesian air force s BAE Systems Hawk 100/200 fleet are under way, providing the light attack/trainer aircraft with a refurbishment that will extend its operational life. Of the 32-strong Hawk fleet operated by the Indonesian air force, eight are under contract to be upgraded, which includes the aircraft being stripped for maintenance, with the aim of extending the life of the fleet that was brought into service in the 1980s/1990s out to Michael Salkeld, regional director for BAE Systems International, told the Show Daily that this work is being carried out under a contract signed in He added that a navigation system is also being added to the Hawks. 20 The ambition is to upgrade all of the aircraft to this new standard, although for now only these first eight are under contract to be modified. The company claims there are more tangible requirements for the acquisition of a new fleet of Hawks elsewhere, although there is no reason why Indonesia would not consider a new-build buy, particularly considering the air force is looking to bolster its fighter fleet and maintain a capability of a minimum of 150 combat aircraft. Salkeld noted that Indonesia could benefit from the newest T2 version of the Hawk and it would be an excellent buy, through which it would receive a fourth-generation capability that includes enhancements such as a glass cockpit. The Hawk is typically offered as a complementary aircraft to the Eurofighter Typhoon, and Salkeld noted that the Hawk The need for a capable naval fleet at an affordable cost is a common priority across the region, and the upgrades of a number of in-service vessels are being targeted by industry to extend the life of these fleets. Vessels are in need of upgrade in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand, with the prevalent threats within the South China Sea and the extent of these nations EEZs calling for a more reliable at-sea capability. More affordable capability Ultra Electronics (Hall B, Stand B019) is an experienced manufacturer of electronics including sonar and electro-optical fire control systems, but the company is also active as a prime for the refurbishment of vessels. It has previously updated the Indonesian Navy s KRI Fatahillah (361) corvette (pictured), having carried out a so-called mid-life modernisation phase 1. Ultra says that it oversees all areas of work on these programmes so there is one point of contact for the customer, including provision of installation, training and maintenance. Alan Meredith, sales and marketing director for the company, said the cost of refurbishment is approximately one-third of that of buying a new vessel, and comes with a 15- to 20-year services guarantee. This effectively offers a brand-new ship for a third of the price, Meredith explained. The company has bid and is being considered for some tenders of this type in the region, and a decision is pending on certain ones soon. BAE Systems (UK Pavilion), meanwhile, is in the process of upgrading the Bung Tomoclass corvette that Indonesia acquired from Brunei in 2013, and would use its experience on programmes such as this to pitch for further refurbishment work. The three ships were not accepted by Brunei from BAE Systems, and while they have relatively few operational hours on them, there are obsolete systems on board, including the armaments. The corvette was supposed to receive the VL Seawolf point defence missile system, although this was never installed and is now no longer in production. MBDA is therefore positioning its Sea Ceptor as an upgrade option for the fleet, leveraging the experience the system has on the Royal Navy s Type 23 upgrade programme.

Get a jet up there Swedish company Northseadrones (Hall D, Stand D221) is showing a full-scale model of its short take-off vertical landing (STOVL) jet drone at Indo Defence. The 2m wingspan naval drone is powered by a N turbine engine and is fitted with a 1.5kg payload in the nose. With a maximum take-off weight of 25kg, the craft has an action radius of up to 50km. Its maximum speed is in excess of 350km/h, while cruise speed is 250km/h. After completion of a surveillance/ reconnaissance or targeting mission, the drone returns to the launch vessel. The vertical landing is preceded by first jettisoning the hatches covering the embedded wing- and fuselagemounted propellers that act as stabilisers, before swivelling the turbine into a vertical position for the deck landing. A blast to disrupt BY SAM J BASCH Canadian company CTS (Hall B, Stand B075) offers disruption technology for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and unexploded ordnance, based on a scientific approach. Like many of its products, the CTS Lance disrupter derived from the company s close work with explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technicians combined with its own extensive R&D and engineering expertise. The Twin Lance disrupter system is essentially a double Lance with the same features, mounted on the same stand. It can be loaded with different projectiles for appropriate action after assessing the target, e.g. one shot to disable a critical component and a second shot for general disruption. When mounted on remotely operated vehicles, it affords the opportunity of re-arming for a second shot when necessary. Simultaneous firing on large-volume targets will double the neutralising effect. The patented zero-convergence aiming system self-aligns, thus eliminating the need for recalibration. Two high-intensity green lasers create an accurate cross-hair clearly visible in direct sunlight from more than 15m away. Not only does this simplify the training process, but also allows for quicker deployment as the lasers Twin Lance disrupter system need not be removed prior to firing. According to CTS, the Laser disrupter is lightweight, remarkably safe and easy to use. It sports an advanced recoil absorption system to lower the kinetic energy being transferred to the stand or robot without compromising power. The hybrid recoilless system allows for the Lance and Twin Lance to be mounted on even the smallest tactical robots. It has been tested on ICOR, irobot, the ECA Group s Cameleon and Cobra, Telerob s systems, QinetiQ s Talon and Remotec s F6A. The system is operated from a lightweight Scabbard stand that fits in the Baldric backpack that can store a complete Lance or Twin Lance disrupter, along with its components and accessories. The Baldric is designed to look like a civilian hiking style backpack to allow the user to avoid public awareness when necessary.

While the K9 Thunder was originally developed to meet the operational requirements of the South Korean Army, it has already had a significant impact on the export market, often beating the German PzH mm/52 calibre SP artillery system to win major contracts. So far, export sales have been made to Estonia, Finland, India, Norway, Poland and Turkey. Some of these are brand-new systems, while others have been older systems upgraded and with local production in Turkey (complete system, as the Firtina), India (complete system followed by local production) and Poland (hull for the local Crab 155m/52 calibre turret). Because the system has an onboard fire control and land navigation system, it can come into action, carry out a fire mission and then redeploy before any counter-battery fire. It can also carry out multiple-round simultaneousimpact fire missions. On the export trail Scale model of the K9 Thunder self-propelled artillery system, which is being selected by an increasing number of export customers A burst rate of fire of three rounds in less than 15 seconds can be achieved with a maximum rate of fire of 6-8 rounds/minute for three minutes; a total of 48 x 155mm projectiles and associated modular charges are carried. The 155mm/52 calibre ordnance has a 23-litre chamber that meets the NATO Joint Ballistic Memorandum of Understanding. Maximum range depends on the projectile/ charge combination. When firing the old 155mm M107 high-explosive (HE) projectile, the maximum range is only 18km, but firing the more recent locally developed 155mm K315 HE rocket-assisted projectile extends the range to 50km. To supply the K9 Thunder with new ammunition, the company has developed and placed in production the K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicle, which is based on the same hull. All fired up The Spanish Everis Aerospace and Defense and New Technologies Global Systems (NGTS) Alakran 120mm Light Mortar Carrier (LMC) is being shown at Indo Defence by IndoCertes (Hall B, Stand B032) and is due to remain in the country for firing trials later this year. The Alakran 120mm LMC has been designed to be integrated onto any platform with a payload of 1.5 tonnes and is being shown here at Indo Defence fitted to a Toyota Land Cruiser (4x4). The 120mm smooth mortar is mounted on the rear of the platform and lowered to the ground through the rear arc using a low-maintenance electropneumatic system, so that when fired, the recoil force is absorbed by the ground rather than the platform. To lay the mortar onto the target, an electromechanical system is used with a manual back-up in case of power failure. Traverse arc is 2,130 mils, while elevation is 800-1,600 mils and there is automatic aiming after every shot fired. Trials have shown that the Alakran takes 30 Alakran 120mm LMS integrated onto the rear of a Toyota Land Cruiser 70 and with mortar lowered to the ground seconds to come into action and, once a fire mission has been completed, it can be laid onto a new target in five seconds. When the fire mission is completed, it takes just 15 seconds to come out of action and redeploy to another fire position, which makes it highly survivable. Maximum stated rate of fire is 12 rounds/min, with 4 rounds/min in the sustained fire role and with 40 rounds of 120mm mortar bomb carried. When fitted with a 120mm smoothbore mortar with a barrel length of 180cm, the maximum range is being quoted as 8,250m. It could also be fitted with a 120mm rifled barrel or even a 81mm NATO or Russian 82mm mortar barrel. A computerised fire control system with a flat-panel display shows its own location, as well as the location of the targets. An undisclosed export customer has already placed a contract for 100 Alakran LMC systems integrated onto a Toyota Land Cruiser 70, with deliveries well underway.

24 24 Identifying friend or foe BY BETH STEVENSON Leonardo (Hall D, Stand D208) and LIG Nex1 (Hall D, Stand D240C) have signed a strategic agreement that will initially address the Republic of Korea s requirement to upgrade its identification friend or foe (IFF) capability to the newest Mode 5 standard. IFF provides operators with the ability to distinguish between friendly forces and those that may be considered hostile, sending out a signal to other platforms that needs to be responded to with a correct password in order to not be classified as a threat. Mode 5 is the latest standard and will make the Republic of Korea s aircraft fleet compliant with NATO standards and in turn interoperable with NATO forces. Mode 5 uses advanced cryptographic techniques to protect attempts at deceiving or jamming the system. Leonardo is the selected industry partner of the UK Ministry of Defence to upgrade 31 platform types totalling 350 systems across the nation s three armed services to this standard, and the company says it will draw on this experience to offer risk reduction for the South Korean requirement. With South Korean partner LIG Nex1, Leonardo is offering to localise production of certain parts of the system in-country, something that it has been doing in other ways in Korea. For example, in 2017 the company signed a memorandum of understanding with an undisclosed defence contractor to work on jointly providing avionics and mission systems, and it has also transferred its Electronic Warfare Operational Support programme capability to members of the Korean navy, air force and agency for defence development. The Republic of Korea Navy operates the AW159 helicopter, meanwhile, which additionally carries Leonardo s Seaspray radar and helicopter integrated defensive aids suite. Systems Engineering & Assessment (SEA) (UK Pavilion) is showcasing its KraitArray towed sonar array, which it claims could offer a lowcost and easily integrated capability for regional navies looking to upgrade their respective antisubmarine warfare capabilities. The towed array is smaller than legacy acoustic sensors of this type, and is a low-power miniaturised system that can be integrated in a number of ways, including via a winch from a vessel, towed from an unmanned Towed sonar array in miniature underwater vehicle, or even laid on a seabed. It is just 16mm in diameter, which SEA claims is a significant reduction in size compared with legacy systems. KraitArray further benefits from being able to connect via an analogue or digital interface, and includes 32 acoustic channels. It is not used in the Asia-Pacific region at the moment, David Hinds, vice-president of strategic accounts at SEA, told the Show Daily, but has potential to be a system of interest to nations in this area. Regionally, it could be used to monitor human trafficking or illegal fishing, for example, and in support of border security or the monitoring of EEZ, of which Indonesia, with its thousands of islands, has many. KraitArray is currently integrated and deployed on the Liquid Robotics Wave Glider UUV, because its low size, weight and power mean that it is suited to solar-powered platforms. SEA is also promoting its torpedo launcher system, which can launch NATO-standard calibre munitions, and is attracting interest from a number of nations in the region. We have lots of interest in this because the nations in this region are agnostic to NATO-standard calibres, Hinds noted.

25 French flair BY SAM J BASCH With navies around the world actively engaged in or planning modernisation of their fleets, Naval Group of France (Hall D, Stand D180) is showcasing its high-technology solutions at Indo Defence this week. The Gowind corvette is suited to navies looking for a complete combat and multimission vessel for protection of the nation s sovereignty, naval defence and maritime security operations. Diving deep BY BETH STEVENSON US company JFD, part of James Fisher and Sons, is at the show (Hall A, Stand A240) pitching to the regional market its range of systems designed to increase the safety of covert special forces maritime operations. These include submarine rescue systems and vehicles that offer a safe and speedy rescue from subsurface vessels. JFD also offers rebreather equipment for divers that is able to operate at depths of 100m, as well as special force delivery systems that 25 The type has already been selected by Malaysia and Egypt, with the former having just laid down the fourth Maharaja Lela-class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) on order for the Royal Malaysian Navy at the Boustead Naval Shipyard (BNS) in Lumut, Perak. The design of Malaysia s LCS is derived from the Gowind 2500 corvette. According to a recent Jane s report, Naval Group is providing technical assistance to BNS for the programme under a technology transfer agreement. The first of class are sealed carriers for deployment of personnel. The latter can operate out to 150 nautical miles when on the surface, nautical miles semisubmerged, and 5-10 nautical miles when fully submerged. Last month, the company announced the was launched in August Providing the capabilities of a frigate, the multimission surface combatant displaces 3,000 tonnes at its top speed of 28kt, and has a standard range of 5,000 nautical miles (9,260km) at 16kt. The launch of the Port Said Gowind corvette, the first warship built in Egypt, took place in September this year. While representing a big success for the Alexandria Shipyard team, it also reflects the effectiveness of Naval Group s industrial co-operation schemes. This is further underscored by the transfer earlier this year of the first Scorpene Brazilian Navy submarine to the main building of the construction site in Itaguaí in Sepetiba Bay, Brazil, where the Brazilian authorities took acceptance of the three sections of the submarine. The Scorpene, of which Naval Group has sold 14 to date, is capable of all types of missions, including surface vessel warfare, antisubmarine warfare, long-range strikes, special operations and intelligence gathering. Stealthy and fast, it is equipped with weapon launching tubes and various weapons, including missiles and mines. The company is also displaying other capabilities, such as the Belharra frigate and the F21 heavy torpedo. The Belharra frigate is the new combat ship for naval supremacy and crisis management. As a compact frigate, it is able to perform a broad range of missions either standalone or as part of a task force. launch of the Stealth CDLSE Mk2 and Mk2-ED (extended duration), the latest enhanced models of its Clearance Diver s Life Support Equipment rebreather, used primarily for mine countermeasures explosive ordnance disposal. The new variants feature a number of enhancements, including new and more advanced O 2 sensors, which enable the control system to respond rapidly and accurately to changes in life support system status; and an improved choice of cylinders. In addition, the Mk2-ED variant contains an extended duration scrubber, which provides an increased dive time of six to eight hours the only set on the market able to provide this extended endurance capability.

26 26 Panoramic surveillance The Russian concern Shvabe (Hall A, Stand A195) is now marketing its latest PPNK commander s panoramic surveillance device Local Indonesian company Rajawali Lintas Kreasi (Hall B, Stand B057) is showing two of the more recent Russian military trucks it is marketing in Indonesia. These are the GAZ Sadko Next (4x4) and the Ural (6x6). Both of these trucks are in the bonneted on the export market to provide main battle tank (MBT) commanders with an enhanced surveillance and target acquisition capability. According to the contractor, the stabilised PPNK sight has a maximum detection and recognition range of 3,500m. The thermal channel has four fields of view, which are surveillance (24 x 18 ), wide (9 x 6.75 ), narrow (3 x 2.25 ) and electronic zooming (1.5 x 1.12 ). The PPNK sighting system weighs around 70kg and covers an elevation arc from -15 to +65. It is run from a 22 to 29V power supply. The company stated that in addition to being installed on MBTs, it can be installed on BMP series infantry fighting vehicles and BMD airborne assault vehicles to enhance their capability. Many of the older Russian MBTs are fitted with image intensification sights, which have limited capabilities with regard to range. Thermal sighting systems can detect and recognise targets at much longer ranges in all weathers, so therefore provide a significant enhancement to a platform s capability. From Russia with trucks Russian Ural (6x6) fitted with a standard cargo body configuration rather that the forward control type favoured by some countries. Both have a rear cargo body fitted with bows and a tarpaulin cover. The GAZ Sadko Next (4x4) has a payload of 2,500kg and is powered by a YMZ-534 V-4 diesel developing 110kW coupled to a manual five-speed transmission and a two-speed transfer case, which gives a maximum road speed of 95km/h. The front and rear suspension consists of semi-elliptical leaf springs and hydraulic double-action shock absorbers. Steering is power assisted. The GAZ Sadko Next (4x4) is being marketed in both left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) configurations. The front and rear axles are fitted with differential locks and a central tyre inflation system (CTIS) is fitted as standard. The larger Ural (6x6) has a payload of 6,000kg and is powered by a YMZ-238M2T V-8 diesel developing 176kW, which is coupled to a manual five-speed transmission and a two-speed transfer box, giving a maximum quoted road speed of 95km/h. The front and rear suspension is of the leaftype with hydraulic shock absorbers, with the rear also being fully articulated. Like the GAZ Sadko Next, the larger 6x6 vehicle is being marketed in LHD and RHD configurations, is fitted with CTIS as standard for maximum cross-country mobility and has front and rear differential locks.

27 27 Rocket science BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS The Indian Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO)/Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE, Stand B125, India pavilion), has released additional details of the guided 214mm rocket for use with the Pinaka artillery rocket system (ARS) currently deployed by the Indian Army. This latest solid propellant rocket has a minimum range of 20km and a maximum range of 80km and is claimed to have a circular error of probability (CEP) of 30m at all ranges, which means fewer rockets have to be fired in order to neutralise the target. The guidance, navigation and control unit is housed in the ogive of the warhead and includes inertial plus global positioning guidance (GPS+INS). The canard-based aerodynamic control unit is in the actuator bay. The original solid propellant rockets have a minimum range of 12.6km and a maximum range of 37.5km and can be fitted with various types of warhead including pre-formed fragmentation, incendiary, submunitions and practice. The new system is mounted on a locally produced Tatra (8x8) truck, with the 12-round launcher mounted on a turntable at the rear of the platform. According to the DRDO, a complete salvo of 12 rounds can be fired in just 44 seconds, with a battery of six launchers capable of neutralising an area of 1,000 x 800m. The Pinaka ARS can rapidly come into action, as the launcher is fitted with an Automatic Gun Alignment and Positioning System (AGAPS) for land navigation and launcher orientation. This provides a shoot-and-scoot capability; the DRDO said it takes only three minutes to come into action and two minutes to come out of action. Effective operations BY BETH STEVENSON AeroVironment (Hall D, Stand D060) has announced that it has received a $3.2 million contract from the US government to provide the RQ-20B Puma AE II unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to an undisclosed nation within the Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) area of responsibility. Delivery of the systems is expected to take place by 30 March 2019, to an allied nation within INDOPACOM that covers much of the Asia- Pacific region, and is being sold under the US government s Foreign Military Sales scheme. The vast, diverse landscape of the INDOPACOM area of operation demands small unmanned aircraft systems that can support ground, riverine and maritime operations effectively, said Kirk Flittie, vice-president and general manager of the company s UAS business. The combat-proven Puma has demonstrated its unique effectiveness in a wide range of operating environments, from mountains to deserts, from the Arctic to Antarctica, on land and on the open ocean, delivering actionable intelligence to help customers proceed with certainty. While it has been revealed that Puma s smaller sister UAV, the RQ-11 Raven, has been acquired by nations in the region including Australia, the Philippines and Thailand, operators in Asia-Pacific for the RQ-20B have not previously been disclosed.
