To give response, you can simply greet the person back with hai or halo. Budi Ani : Halo, Ani. : Hai, Budi. Selamat pagi Good Morning a.m a.m Selamat siang Good Afternoon a.m p.m Selamat sore Good Late Afternoon p.m p.m Selamat malam Good Evening p.m a.m Selamat tidur Good Night Selamat is very useful in Indonesian language. It means safe/good. Selamat itself can stand alone which means congratulations. To greet people in a formal way, you can use selamat + times of the Day. However, to say good night, we have selamat tidur which literally means good sleeping. You, therefore, can use selamat + a verb. 1. Budi : Selamat pagi, Ani. Ani : Selamat pagi, Budi. 2. You : Selamat tidur, Ibu. (mother) Your mother : Selamat tidur.

Yanti Tomi : Baik, dan Bapak? : Baik, terima kasih. In the second example, you can see that Yanti says dan Bapak instead of dan kamu. Kamu is just used to those whose relationship is close to you e.g. family and friends; whereas Bapak or Ibu is used to show your respect to someone and normally used in a formal occasion.

The most commonly used is either sampai nanti or sampai jumpa besok. If you will see the person again at the same day, then use sampai nanti, but if you see the person again tomorrow, use sampai jumpa besok. In conversation, we just say sampai besok. It depends on you whether you want to say sampai jumpa besok or just say sampai jumpa. (You leave and your mother stays. You will return at p.m) 1. You : Selamat tinggal, Ibu. Ibu : Selamat jalan. Hati-hati. You : Sampai nanti. Ibu : Sampai nanti. (Your boss is leaving and will return tomorrow early afternoon) 2. You : Selamat jalan, Pak. Hati-hati. Your boss : Selamat tinggal. Sampa jumpa besok siang. You : Sampai jumpa.
