Pernahkah kamu mengadakan sebuah acara atau perayaan di rumahmu? Apakah kamu mengundang teman-temanmu atau anggota keluargamu yang lain? Jika ya, bagaimana kamu mengundang mereka untuk datang ke acara tersebut? Atau, apakah sekolahmu pernah mengirimkan undangan rapat orang tua siswa kepada orang tuamu di rumah? Jika ya, pernahkah kamu melihat bagaimana struktur surat tersebut dan apa isinya? Seperti namanya, surat undangan bertujuan untuk mengundang seseorang untuk datang ke sebuah acara, baik acara formal maupun acara non-formal. Pada acara formal, tipe undangan yang digunakan adalah undangan resmi (formal invitation card), sedangkan pada acara nonformal atau acara pribadi, tipe undangan yang biasa digunakan adalah undangan tidak resmi, yang pada umumnya berupa kartu undangan (invitation card).

Kakakmu ingin mengundang teman-teman di kantornya untuk menghadiri acara pesta pernikahannya. Definition Formal invitation letter atau surat undangan resmi digunakan untuk mengundang seseorang atau sebuah institusi untuk menghadiri acara resmi (formal event), seperti rapat (meeting), presentasi produk (product presentation), dan pertemuan bisnis (business gathering). Bahasa yang digunakan di dalam formal invitation letter adalah ragam bahasa resmi yang tujuannya untuk menghormati orang yang diundang. 2. 6 3. Language Features Surat undangan resmi dicirikan dengan penggunaan kalimat simple present tense dan future tense. Simple present tense digunakan untuk menyampaikan informasi tentang acara yang akan diselenggarakan, dan future tense digunakan menanyakan assurance (kepastian) apakah tamu yang diundang akan menghadiri acara tersebut dan urutan acara yang akan dilaksanakan. Untuk mengetahui ciri-ciri simple future tense, perhatikan pola verbal sentence dari simple future tense berikut: Subject + will + Base verb + object/ complement. Bahasa yang digunakan didalam invitation card pada umumnya tidak resmi, tetapi penggunaan bahasa yang resmi juga sering digunakan ketika mengundang seseorang yang dihormati, seperti atasan dan rekan bisnis yang sangat penting sebagai tanda respect (menghormati) mereka. 2.
