1 SHOW DAILY 2 INCORPORATING WITH featuring Thursday 8 November 2018 Fighter acquisitions to improve the strength of the TNI-AU page 4 Partnerships are key The eighth edition of Indo Defence was officially opened by Indonesian vice president Jusuf Kalla (pictured) on 7 November, welcoming and inviting domestic and foreign delegations and industry to work together to develop partnerships that will prove fruitful for international defence relations. The deputy premier welcomed Indonesia s partners to the show, which will see 193 official delegations from 33 countries visit Indo Defence. Official representatives from a number of nations were welcomed to stand by Kalla as the show was opened, namely from Australia, Brazil, Brunei, Czech Republic, Denmark, Fiji, Iran, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam. In a multi-agency effort, the army, the police and members of parliament are joining forces to represent the show, which has increased in size with the addition of two extra halls at this year s iteration of the exhibition. The show has grown by some 15 per cent this year since 2016, the organisers say, and there is an increase in the number of participants that want to take part in the show. A total of 867 exhibitors from 60 countries are here, with 30 dedicated pavilions having been set up. Local and international companies, plus the government, media outlets and academia, are all encouraged to work together during the exhibition, co-operating to ensure that the most effective technologies and relationships are developed. Over the four days of the show, some 2,500 visitors are expected, and official delegations from Indonesia are to include the ministry of business and finance, education, foreign relations, research and testing, and communications. The government claimed that Indo Defence is effectively utilised when it takes place every two years to strengthen product offerings, as well as to bolster the relationships between the Indonesian military and foreign delegations. Indo Defence is now considered the biggest defence show in Asia as a result of this growth, Menurut Menhan, Indonesia s defence minister says, adding that it is also in the top 10 worldwide. 3 3 BY BETH STEVENSON In order to fulfil a number of identified requirements from the Indonesian air force to either update existing systems or fill capability gaps, Saab (Hall D, Stand 075) is ready to offer its flagship fighter and airborne early warning (AEW) system to the nation, should formal requirements be released by the government. Indonesia has a noted requirement for a mixed fleet of at least 150 fighters, which is currently comprised of types including the Su-27 and Su-30s, F-16s, and Hawk 200s. In addition, it has 11 examples of the Su-35 on order, although this deal has been clouded with uncertainty as the US government continues to impose sanctions on sales from Russia. Saab considers the Indonesian market to be a promising one, it said, and is confident its Gripen fighter in either the C/D or E configuration depending on requirements could be a welcome addition to this mixed fleet should a formal process begin. Anders Dahl, head of Saab Indonesia, told the Show Daily the company offers the benefit of technology transfer to customers, which is an appealing prospect for many countries that wish to bolster their own domestic industries via their large-scale acquisitions. Our solutions are suitable for a country that has budget concerns, he noted. Indonesia is a country that has a defence budget representing less than 1 per cent of GDP, so the money available with which to acquire these capabilities is relatively limited. Indonesia is notably missing an AEW capability, and given the scope of the country both in terms of its land and maritime territory, an asset that can carry out air-to-air and airto-surface surveillance while also conducting battle management operations would be a key capability. For this, Saab could offer its Saab 2000-based Erieye AEW capability, which Anders said would be a sensible platform for the air force to operate to introduce it to this type of operation. A winning combination Should Indonesia eventually elect to operate the Gripen and Erieye, this would somewhat mirror the successful operation of the two capabilities by the Royal Thai Air Force (pictured). Dahl noted that the current governmental administration in Indonesia has done a lot to try to reform the acquisition system, including setting out legal, ethical and procurement processes that make it easier for companies such as Saab to sell into the country. It already partners with state-owned entities in-country, so could further leverage these to help deliver any new capabilities that Indonesia should choose to acquire from Saab, he added. Rigid buoyancy A full-sized black boat enveloped in mock sea spray constitutes a striking display of the latest development by Balakosa Balin Indonesia PT (BBI, Hall B, Stand B315), writes Sam J Basch. What sets this vessel apart from a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) is the V-shaped rigid hull as a result of the tube structure consisting of polyethylene foam with a polyurea coating. The BBI shipyard claims the 12m Rigid Buoyancy Boat (RBB) is a world-first. The material has been tested for ballistic penetration by small arms bullets ranging from 9mm pistol to 5.56mm and 7.62mm sniper ammunition. The rigid boat, capable of speeds up to 40 knots, is exceptionally stable as a result of low laminar air resistance. It is powered by a pair of 250hp Evinrude I-Tech engines and carries up to 12 personnel, with an additional two crew members and a pilot. According to BBI, the RBB is ideal for operations such as beach patrol and search and rescue.

4 4 BY GÜNTER ENDRES The touchdown of Indonesia s first two of 11 Sukhoi Su-35S Flanker-Es, or Super Flankers, on Indonesian soil in August next year will mark the latest stage in the 20-year plan to 2024, designed to develop and improve the strength of the Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Udara (TNI AU), the air force branch of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. Together with the recent delivery of 24 Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcons, the still on-track joint development with South Korea of the KF-X/IF-X, and other types on the present inventory, the Russian super-manoeuvrable aircraft will form part of eight squadrons of 16 fighter jets each, as quoted by Air Force Chief of Staff, air chief marshal Yuyu Sutisna, published in Antara News. The Su-35 is being acquired to replace the air force s ageing Northrop F-5E Tiger fleet and was chosen in preference to the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, F-16 and Saab Gripen, most likely to consolidate its familiarity with the Su-27SK and Su-30MK2. A purchase contract was signed on 14 February The first deliveries were initially due in August, but that date has been pushed back into next year. The delay is not due, as reported in some media, to the threat of US sanctions being applied to Indonesia under the recently implemented anti-russian CAATSA (Countering America s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act) that could have threatened the spares supply PHOTO: SUKHOI for Indonesia s US-built aircraft, but rather to delays arising from the complex part-barter agreement under which the aircraft are being acquired, at least according to Wahid PHOTO: KOREA AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES Indonesia is strengthening the air force branch of its National Armed Forces with the acquisition of 11 Sukhoi Su-35S Super Flankers Supriyadi, Indonesia s ambassador in Moscow. To be based at Iswahyudi, the Su-35 singleseat 4.5-generation heavy fighter is powered by two AL-37FU/117S thrust-vectoring turbofan engines rated at 142kN, capable of a speed of Mach 2.26 at altitude, with a ceiling of 60,000ft and a range of 3,400km. Its Tikhomirov NIIP Irbis-E passive phased-array radar can reportedly detect and track up to 30 air targets, simultaneously engaging up to eight. It is believed to be a match for all Western fighters, with the exception of the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. The Su-35s are being acquired through a barter arrangement in exchange for palm oil, coffee and other agricultural goods, a deal that could not be matched by Western competitors. The barter element accounts for around half of the contract s value. This has been a sticking point up to now, with Indonesia said to have missed the payment deadlines in the second half of 2017 and the first half of 2018, brought about by a worrying economic downward spiral that has seen the rupiah plummet to a near all-time low. As the biggest economy in the ASEAN area, these are major concerns, but economic forecasts from the International Monetary Fund and the OECD remain positive. Nevertheless, Indonesia has indicated it is seeking to renegotiate the financial arrangement with South Korea to ease the pressure on the state budget, and to review the technological benefits to Indonesia through the programme. Contributions to development costs, production expenses, technology transfers, intellectual property rights and marketing are all up for re-evaluation, but the Ministry of Defence stressed that the programme remains on track and confirmed that it had been making some payments. Indonesia and South Korea agreed in 2014 to develop a fighter jet, and under a finance agreement signed in 2015, Indonesia committed to contribute 20 per cent of the development costs, which are estimated at about USD8 billion. In return for its investment, Indonesia has joint developer status and has integrated engineers from the state-owned aerospace company, PT Dirgantara Indonesia into the project in South Korea. It is envisaged to produce six prototypes and a first flight in 2022, with initial operating capability in Indonesia is expected to receive at least 50 aircraft. The advanced multirole 4.5-generation fighter is powered by two General Electric F414-KI afterburning turbofans with a thrust of 90kN plus, giving it a top speed of Mach The engines will be assembled, installed and integrated by Hanwha Techwin. The 10 hardpoints will carry air-to-air missiles such as the MBDA Meteor, Diehl IRIS-T, AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9 Sidewinder. Its avionics include an active electronically scanned array radar by Hanwha Systems, infrared search and track, electro-optical targeting system and radio frequency jammer. The Indonesian IF-X will have greater range, boom refuelling system and a different datalink to allow communications with its fleet of Russian Su-27/30/35 Flankers. On 28 February 2018, TNI AU marked the final delivery of 24 Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. The 19 single-seat F-16Cs and five F-16D two-seaters were gifted by the US from former US Air Force and Air National Guard aircraft that were surplus to requirements. The jets were upgraded from Block 25 to Block 52 at the USAF s Ogden Air Logistics Complex in Utah. Indonesia already operates 10 earlier F-16 models. The US generosity is part of its attempt to strengthen bilateral ties and protect Indonesian air space, with an eye on China s growing military capability and its territorial ambitions in the region. 8 BY SAM J BASCH Sea Ceptor aims for corvette retrofit Shine a light Operations at night require light of various kinds, for which Australian company Trakka Systems (Hall F, Stand F221) has the solution. The TrakkaBeam A800 advanced searchlight makes use of innovative refractive optics, instead of the traditional reflective optics, to provide significant beam strength at half the power of traditional searchlights. It is used in airborne, marine, law enforcement and a range of other applications. A key advantage of the A800 is that any of several filters can be activated at the touch of a button from inside the airborne platform s cockpit. The filters cover the range from extreme 8 covert infrared to ultraviolet, which is especially useful to reduce the glare from fog, snow or moisture, and to enhance natural colour in the target field. The searchlights and Trakka s electro-optical cameras can be combined with its innovative mapping system and third-party products to provide a complete critical vision solution. Easy to install, the design also reduces costly maintenance, with the highest proven mean time between failures (MTBF) in the industry. According to the company, a significant order from Airbus Helicopters will see the installation of eight A800 searchlights on H225M Caracal helicopters of two unnamed foreign governments for military deployment. At IndoDefence this week, Trakka Systems is displaying its TLX model, the latest in the highintensity, high-power searchlights, boasting a European guided weapons house MBDA (Hall D, Stand D210) is pushing its new Sea Ceptor local area anti-air missile system as a potential retrofit for the Indonesian Navy s three Bung Tomo-class corvettes, writes Richard Scott. Based on the new Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) effector, Sea Ceptor has been ordered by the UK Ministry of Defence to replace VL Seawolf on the Royal Navy s Type 23 frigates, and to equip new Type 26 frigates from build. The system has also secured export orders from New Zealand and Chile for frigate upgrade programmes. The 95m Bung Tomo-class ships were originally designed to receive the VL Seawolf point defence missile system (with space for a 16-cell silo forward of the bridge). However the Seawolf system was not installed prior to Indonesia s 2013 agreement to acquire the ships. With VL Seawolf no longer in production, MBDA is now proposing to equip the three vessels with the next-generation Sea Ceptor system. As demonstrated by the highly successful Type 23 upgrade programme for the Royal Navy, Sea Ceptor is a proven and low-risk upgrade option for vessels configured for the previous Seawolf system such as the Bung Tomo corvettes, an MBDA spokesperson said. Also, the system s design, including its active radar seeker and a two-way datalink, makes it virtually radar- and combat management system-agnostic. Capable of ranges of more than 25km, CAMM uses an active radar seeker (supported by mid-course guidance updates) to deliver an allweather engagement capability against multiple targets simultaneously. It also features novel soft launch technology, where a gas-powered piston propels the missile away from the ship before thrusters orientate it in the required direction of flight. Once the low-speed/low-energy turnover is complete, the missile fires its main rocket motor. At only 100kg per missile and utilising cold vertical launch, Sea Ceptor offers substantial weight and volume savings over alternate systems, MBDA told the Show Daily, while providing shorter interception times and substantially increased maximum range. TrakkaBeam TLX 25 per cent increase in light intensity with improved performance and functionality. It offers an optional dual sensor TI/TV co-located camera payload for enhanced day/night situational awareness and mission capabilities.

Menurut ERA, Vera-NG menggunakan teknik pengintaian jarak jauh dan luas dengan memberikan efek melihat tanpa terlihat. 14 14 Better protected BY SAM J BASCH Ever since Beretta Defense Technologies (BDT) (Hall D, Stand D152) brought together some of the world s most recognisable names in weaponry and equipment in a strategic alliance, the company has continued to broaden its military and law enforcement solutions. The company s flagship products include the ARX100 tactical semi-automatic rifle, designed to take the concept of a modular rifle to futuristic levels. Ultra-reliable with BY BETH STEVENSON Following the success of the sales of its Argus soldier system to the Canadian Army, Rheinmetall Canada (Hall A, Stand A380) is displaying its offering here at the show as discussions take place with nations in the Asia- Pacific area that are looking to define their requirements for such a system. In August, it was announced that the Canadian Army had acquired an additional 1,256 systems to be delivered in 2019, bringing the total to some 4,600, and now that programme has reached a high level of maturity, the company is looking to other potential markets for the soldier system. A name to remember ambidextrous controls and an easily replaceable barrel, it offers virtually endless possibilities for customisation, according to BDT. The ARX100 is adaptable to any firing scenario and is well suited for today s most demanding tactical shooter. Together with TWorx Ventures, Beretta is now offering the ARX Intelligent Rail, which allows Corvus accessories to be attached directly to the rail to charge, instead of carrying extra batteries. In this way, the rail enables the soldier to be self-sustaining for a defined period to successfully carry out an assigned mission. Beretta recently announced the.50 BMG calibre Corvus long-range bolt-action rifle from Victrix Armaments. With the acquisition of renowned Italian brand Victrix Armaments, which offers solutions in the field of precision boltaction rifles and related technologies, BDT now has a true hard hitting sniper and anti-materiel rifle for extreme long-range engagements. While European militaries are seasoned operators of this type of technology, the Asia- Pacific region is relatively behind. Singapore and Malaysia have both adopted soldier systems developed by their respective defence industries, although the rest of the region is still exploring this type of capability, and is looking to proven designs that can be easily introduced into service. We are in the exploration stage at the moment, Frantz Beaujuin, technical specialist for soldier systems at Rheinmetall Canada, told the Show Daily. One of the main strengths is that this is already in service with Canada. The company is helping militaries in the region understand the improvements that adoption of such a system will bring, and the Beretta states that the 15kg Corvus is one of the most accurate, light and compact rifles in its category. It provides a 0.5 MOA (minutes of angle) accuracy at 1,000m in a compact package. Complemented by several new safety features, the Corvus was designed for any challenging combat environment. It expands the already broad range of precision rifles marketed by Beretta and will complement the line of Sako and Tikka rifles from BDT. BDT comprises Benelli, Sako, Steiner and Beretta, founded in 1526, making it the oldest firearms factory in the world. Through 15 generations of the Beretta family, this successful company has exported its quality weaponry to more than 100 countries worldwide. It is no exaggeration to say that in BDT resides centuries of experience. Benelli has an enviable reputation for tactical semi-automatics, rifles and pump-action shotguns, while Sako of Finland is widely regarded as a pioneer of sniper rifles and quality ammunition. The German firm Steiner is one of the most advanced manufacturers of military binoculars and rifle scopes in the world.

This is all at the discussion stage, and conversations regarding transfer of technology have not yet happened, although Rheinmetall is open to considering this if it was required by a customer. Most of these potential customers are looking to equip forces with this capability in the coming two to three years, Beaujuin said. Germany operates a slightly different variant of Argus dubbed the Gladius, with Rheinmetall largely acting as the systems integrator on the programmes, incorporating various elements including a Harris radio and a handheld computer provided by Saab. Integrating legacy systems is one of the key requirements of a soldier system, Beaujuin noted, so Argus is flexible in meeting the needs of different forces. 15 Sound play Service Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC) (Hall A, Stand A240) has introduced its MiPlayer broadcasting service to the Asia-Pacific market for the first time at Indo Defence. The system operates over a local wi-fi network without the need for an internet connection, and can provide a network capability during military operations, deployments and exercises, as well as during natural disasters. MiPlayer is operational with the UK land and naval forces, and the system is progressing to be able to be used at higher densities with lower costs. MiPlayer has subsequently been used to support disaster relief in Nepal, and the company said it is eyeing further opportunities to offer the system to new markets. 18 18 BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS French company Arquus (Outdoor Stand OD57) has brought its Dagger (4x4) light armoured vehicle to Indo Defence to meet potential local user requirements. Dagger was originally developed to meet the requirements of the French Army for a Petit Véhicule Protégé (PVP), or light protected vehicle, and more than 1,100 have been delivered and are used for a wide range of missions. Export contracts have so far been placed by Chile, Romania and Togo and, although originally developed for military use, the vehicle is now being marketed for police and paramilitary operations because its compact size permits it to be used in confined spaces. It addition to the commander and driver, Dagger can carry six dismounts. A wide range of weapons can be mounted on the roof, such as a protected weapon station or remote weapon station, typically armed with a 7.62mm machine gun. Some of the French Army PVPs are fitted with a WASP remote weapon station developed by Arquus and Safran under their previous names. According to Arquus, Dagger can also be fitted with roof-mounted surface-to-air missiles and anti-tank guided weapons. There is also a version of Dagger with a raised roofline to the rear of the commander s and driver s position to provide greater internal volume for more specialised roles, such as ambulance. Dagger has a typical gross vehicle weight of Sharp edge about 5.5 tonnes and is powered by a 170hp diesel coupled to a fully automatic five-speed transmission, which gives it a top road speed of 110km/h and a road range of up to 800km. The Arquus company was formed earlier this year, bringing together the famous French vehicle manufacturers of ACMAT, Panhard Defense and Renault Trucks Defense. Today it offers customers a wide range of logistic support vehicles as well as wheeled armoured fighting vehicles. The company is also involved in the French Army Véhicule Blindé de Combat d Infanterie (8x8), for which it supplies the complete driveline and powerpack. It is also an important player in the new generation of French Army Jaguar (6x6) reconnaissance vehicle and the Griffon (6x6) armoured personnel carrier (APC), which is a long-term replacement for the currently deployed Arquus VAB (4x4) APC used in large numbers by the French Army. 20 New for old BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Key countries in the region are now fielding new fleets of tracked and wheeled armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) to replace older vehicles that have now become obsolete and in some cases are difficult to maintain as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is no longer in existence. While some of these new AFVs have come from overseas, an increasing number of countries in the region are now manufacturing their own, with the key subsystems such as engine, transmission, suspension and drive line being imported. Indonesia has taken delivery from Rheinmetall Defence of Germany 103 Leopard 2 main battle tanks (MBTs) and 42 Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs). The former are a mixture 20 of the enhanced Leopard 2RI and Leopard 2+ and support vehicles. Indonesian company PT Pindad and FNSS Savunma Sistemleri of Turkey have developed the Kaplan medium tank (MT), fitted with the latest Belgian CMI Defence Cockerill 3105 turret armed with a 105mm gun fed by a bustlemounted automatic loader, which has enabled the turret crew to be reduced to commander and gunner. Following a successful demonstration in August 2018, it was stated that Indonesia would order a minimum of 44 Kaplan MTs. Indonesia has fielded a large number of locally developed PT Pindad Anoa (6x6) armoured personnel carriers (APCs), plus an increasing number of more specialised versions such as a mortar carrier and an armoured recovery vehicle (ARV). It has also taken delivery from South Korea of a batch of 22 Black Fox Left: PT Pindad Badak fitted with a CMI turret armed with a 90mm gun and a 7.62mm co-axial MG (6x6) vehicles fitted with a CMI Defence turret armed with a 90mm gun and a 7.62mm co-axial machine gun (MG). PT Pindad is now in production of the Badak 90mm Direct Fire Vehicle (6x6), which leverages from the development of the Anoa and is also armed with a 90mm gun and a 7.62mm co-axial MG. The company has also developed the Intal (4x4), which can be used for a wide range of battlefield roles but is typically armed with a roof-mounted protected weapon station armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm MG. There are also a number of specialised versions. The Indonesian Marine Corps has now taken delivery from Russia of a batch of BMP-3F IFVs, which are optimised for amphibious operations. Like the standard BMP-3 IFV, this is fitted with a two-person turret armed with a 100mm gun, a 30mm co-axial cannon and a 7.62mm co-axial MG, plus two bow-mounted 7.62mm MGs. Malaysia has taken delivery from Poland of 48 PT-91M MBTs plus six ARVs, five armoured vehicle-launched bridges (AVLBs) and three armoured engineer vehicles (AEVs). Its fleet of SIBMAS (6x6) and Condor (4x4) vehicles is being supplemented by the procurement of 257 Turkish FNSS Pars (8x8) vehicles, which are now manufactured by the local company DEFTECH under the name of Gempita (Thunder).

The baseline IFV is fitted with a one-person turret armed with a stabilised 25mm M242 dual-feed cannon and a 7.62mm coaxial MG. This version is fully amphibious. The non-amphibious cavalry version is fitted with a South African Denel Land Systems twoperson turret armed with a 30mm dual-feed cannon and a 7.62 mm co-axial MG. Following major upgrades to the French AMX-13 light tank to the AMX-13S1 standard and upgrading its large fleet of M113 APCs and variants, Singapore Kinetics Land Systems has now moved a stage further into the design, development and production of AFVs. The first of these was the Bionix, which was produced in IFV, APC, ARV and AVLB configurations, with components also being used in the more specialised Trailblazer flail-type mine-clearing system. The next was the Bronco articulated all-terrain vehicle (ATV), which has been built in large numbers for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) in many specialised versions. The UK has taken delivery of an enhanced version, known as the Warthog, for deployment to Afghanistan. The Next Generation AFV is now in production for the SAF and is also being marketed by US company SAIC with a Cockerill 3105 turret, as fitted to the Kaplan MT. Singapore has also acquired the German Leopard 2, with most of these being upgraded to an enhanced standard. Here at Indo Defence, German company Rohde & Schwarz (Hall A, Stand A383), a leading single-source supplier of integrated solutions for secure communications and radio intelligence, is presenting its broad portfolio built around advanced software defined radios (SDRs), based on software communications architecture (SCA). The latest generation of SDR/SCA technology is already fielded with the SDTR for vehiclebased tactical communications and the SDHR for highly mobile applications. EIMOS can be integrated onto a wide range of platforms, such as the Spanish URO VAMTAC (4x4) high-mobility vehicle, which is in service in large numbers with the Spanish Army. The 60mm or 81mm muzzle-loaded mortar is mounted on a turntable on the rear of the platform, with electric traverse through a full 360 to enable it to be rapidly laid onto the target. To reduce the stress on the platform, the mortar is fitted with a hydropneumatic recoil system, which is claimed to reduce the recoil force by 90 per cent. This means that, unlike some other mobile mortar systems, no stabilisers have to be lowered to the ground before a target is engaged. The mortar is coupled to a computerised fire control system and a land navigation system, which enables it to rapidly come into action, carry out a fire mission and redeploy before being located and engaged by enemy forces. Maximum range depends on the mortar bomb and its associated charge, but for a 60mm mortar it is typically 4,900m, and for an 81mm mortar 6,900m, with ammunition natures including high-explosive, smoke and illuminating. It is understood that the first export customer for the EIMOS system was Bahrain, which EIMOS mortar system integrated on the rear of a URO VAMTAC ST5 (4x4) cross-country platform, fitted with a central tyre inflation system for enhanced mobility in difficult terrain has integrated the 81mm version on the URO VAMTAC ST5 (4x4) cross-country chassis. In addition to the 81mm EIMOS, it is understood that Bahrain also took delivery of the associated fire control system, communications, forward observer and an unmanned aerial vehicle for target reconnaissance. High-performance vision for shooters BY SAM J BASCH UK-based Qioptiq (Hall A, Stand A245), renowned for its photonic technologies, is showcasing several of its sighting innovations here at Indo Defence. The Dragon-S (S for Sniper) is part of the Dragon family of uncooled thermal products. It was designed specifically to meet the target engagement and surveillance requirements of military customers and law enforcement agencies. Offering a high level of performance in a lightweight, compact and rugged design, it is able to detect man and vehicle targets 24 hours a day, even in poor visibility, in total darkness and through battlefield obscurants. Qioptiq can fit its Lo Glint coating technology as an option to reduce sunlight reflection. Qioptiq s Saker fused weapon sight combines image intensified and thermal imaging technologies for enhanced 24-hour capability to enable the user to rapidly detect, recognise and identify targets in all light, weather and battlefield conditions. The Kite in-line image intensified weapon sight excels in the night-vision clip-on market due to its combination of optical performance, size and weight. Qioptiq, part of Excelitas Technologies, has a worldwide presence with facilities in North America, Europe and Asia. The company offers diverse solutions in detection and optical technology to meet the needs of customers across the world. Thanks to a surveillance and target acquisition support (STAS) contract with the British Armed Forces, Qioptiq has just opened a 3.7 million smart facility in North Wales. The STAS contract merges 20 individual support contracts into one, with the facility intended to ensure mission-critical equipment is available to UK personnel around the world.

24 To undertake passive surveillance without alerting neighbouring nations, the Vera-NG system from Czech company ERA (Hall A, Stand A320) is worthwhile considering. According to the company, the proven passive electronic support measure Vera-NG uses advanced techniques to conduct cross-border long-term and long-range surveillance: in effect it sees without being seen. Jane s reported earlier this year that the Indonesian Armed Forces had acquired the Vera-NG system to provide early warning and strengthen defences around its Ranai air base in the South China Sea. This followed a selection process in 2017, with installation and verification to be completed during Vera-NG has a range capability of 400km, with See without being seen 24 high-capacity real-time tactical 3D geolocation, tracking and identification of airborne, naval and surface targets. It provides 200 real-time tracks that can be compared against a library of 10,000 targets. The system is available in stationary or high-mobility transportable versions for land or sea application. ERA indicates that it can be assigned for passive surveillance, early warning and air defence missions, using onboard emitters as targets. The covert system is passive, because it emits no electromagnetic energy, making it invisible to anti-radar missile systems. The sensors are placed on masts, lightweight tripods or quadpods, and can be easily transported by general-purpose vehicles. In conjunction with the University of Defence in Brno, the company has also built a simulator consisting of consoles for trainee operators and instructors, a central processing station and receiving universal military module. The Vera-NG simulator allows trainees to gain experience in using the advanced system without having an impact on operational missions. Modular remote weapon station BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS FN Herstal (Stand B110, Belgian Pavilion) is showing its DeFNder remote weapon station (RWS) armed with a.50 M3R machine gun. The company has confirmed it is already in service with undisclosed customers. A key feature of the DeFNder RWS is its modular design, which allows it to be tailored to the end user s specific operational requirements as to weapon and sensor pod. The example on display is fitted with OIP Sensor Systems EOPTRIS sensor package on the right side, which includes an uncooled thermal imager operating in the 8-12µm wavelength, with narrow and wide fields of view, charge coupled device day camera and an eye-safe laser rangefinder, which ensures the target is within effective range. The rangefinder has a maximum range of 8,000m and is stated to be accurate to ±5m. The weapon is laid onto the target by the gunner located safely in the hull of the platform, using a flat-panel display and joystick. Other weapon options include 5.56mm and 7.62mm machine guns, up to a 40mm automatic grenade launcher. DeFNder RWS armed with a.50 M3R machine gun in the middle, ammunition box on the left and sensor pod on the right Traverse is electric through a full 360, with weapon elevation from -40 to +70 at 90 /s. This type of RWS is normally installed on armoured personnel carriers as their main armament, but can also be installed on turrets of heavier armoured fighting vehicles to provide a close-in self-defence capability.

25 25 More roles for Turangga BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Local company Tugasanda Defense (Hall A, Stand A310) is presenting a new version of its Turangga (4x4) armoured personnel carrier (APC), which was originally developed using internal research and development funding. An initial batch of 13 Turangga APCs has already been delivered to the Indonesian Army and will be followed by another 23, also in the APC configuration. Tugasanda has also supplied unarmoured ambulance vehicles to the Indonesian Army. The latest model, based on a Ford F-550 (4x4) chassis, is fitted with a complete package of subsystems from Turkey s Aselsan, including a roof-mounted acoustic small arms detection device, retractable mast-mounted battlefield surveillance radar (left) and a retractable mast-mounted surveillance package (right), consisting of day/thermal cameras and a laser rangefinder. It has a welded steel armour body that provides ballistic protection to STANAG 4569 Level 2. Bullet/splinter-proof windows provide the same level of ballistic protection, as well as situational awareness through 360. When used in the APC configuration, the Turangga can carry 12 people including the commander and driver. The vehicle is powered by a 6.7-litre V8 turbocharged diesel engine, coupled to a fully automatic sixspeed transmission and has permanent 4x4 drive. The heavy-duty suspension is claimed to provide a high level of cross-country mobility and 335/80 R20 run-flat tyres are fitted with a bead lock system. Options include a roof-mounted protected Latest version of the Turangga with a complete range of roofmounted sensors from Aselsan. It is also fitted with firing ports weapon station, a remote weapon station or turret, which would typically be armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun, front-mounted winch, firing ports, siren and communications equipment, including radios and a vehicle intercom. Powerful performer Ukrspecexport (Hall B, Stand B042) of Ukraine is emphasising a range of weapons at Indo Defence, including the latest man-portable Skif anti-tank guided weapon system (ATGW), which is already in quantity production. The Skif system consists of the missile in its disposable launcher tube, the missile guidance package and sighting system and the adjustable tripod. There are two calibres of Skif missile: the R2S with a diameter of 130mm and a maximum range of 5,000m, with the tandem high-explosive anti-tank warhead capable of penetrating 800mm of steel armour protected by explosive reactive armour (ERA); and the heavier R2M, which has a diameter of 152mm, a range of 5,500m and can penetrate 1,100mm of armour protected by ERA. The missile is of the laser beam riding type with automatic target tracking; all the operator has to do is to keep his sight on the target until missile impact. With most man-portable ATGWs, the operator is alongside the launcher, but with Skif he can be positioned up to 75m away, which increases his survivability. Ukraine is also marketing tracked and wheeled armoured fighting vehicles, the latter including the BTR-4M (8x8) amphibious armoured personnel carrier, which has been supplied to the Indonesian Marines.

26 26 Aiming NORA BY CHRISTOPHER F FOSS Yugoimport (Hall D, Stand D030) is emphasising its extensive current weapons portfolio, which includes small arms, armoured vehicles, artillery up to 155mm in calibre and a complete range of artillery rocket systems (ARSs). Its NORA B-52 K1 155mm/52 calibre self- propelled (SP) artillery system has been built in significant numbers for the home and export markets. It is based on a KAMAZ 8x8 crosscountry chassis, with the fully protected cab at the front and the protected turret armed with the 155mm/52 calibre ordnance mounted on a turntable at the rear. To provide a more stable firing platform, hydraulically operated outriggers are deployed either side before the turret is unlocked and traversed into the firing position. A total of 36 x 155mm projectiles and associated charges are carried 12 are ready to use and 24 are in reserve. The maximum range depends on the 155mm projectile type and charge, but Yugoimport is quoting 42km when firing a 155mm Extended Range Full Bore Base Bleed (ERFB-BB) high- A multi-role Patriot Excalibur Army (Hall A, Stand A357) of the Czech Republic is expanding its range of wheeled armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) with the introduction of the latest Tatra T815 Patriot (4x4) Medium Armoured Tactical Multi-Mission Vehicle (MATMMV), which is being shown at Indo Defence. This has been designed as a private venture using company funding to provide the end user with a 4x4 vehicle with a high level of protection and mobility that can be used for a wide range of battlefield missions with little modification. Based on a Tatra cross-country chassis, it features adjustable ground clearance, and a central background tube with independent swinging air-suspended half axles that have been designed to improve cross-country mobility as well as improving ride for the crew. The gross vehicle weight is currently being quoted as 12 tonnes, but it has a stretch potential to 15 tonnes because each axle is currently rated at 7.5 tonnes. The MATMMV is powered by a Cummins ISB six-cyclinder diesel developing 210kW (with a Tatra air-cooled diesel developing 230kW as an alternative), which is coupled to an Allison 3200SP automatic transmission with six forward and one reverse gear and a Tatra two-speed transfer case. This gives a maximum road speed of 130km/h and a range of up to 500km. Standard equipment includes a central tyre inflation system that allows the driver to adjust the tyre pressure to suit the terrain being crossed. The Patriot MATMMV features an all-welded steel hull of a patented design that the company calls the Kitted Hull Concept and which is claimed to provide ballistic protection up to NATO STANAG 4569 level 3 and mine protection to the STANAG 4569 Level 2a/2b standard. The baseline vehicle has a crew of two consisting of commander and driver, plus four dismounts. The first version is referred to as the short wheel base (SWB) model and has a wheel base of 3.50m, but a 3.65m long wheel base (LWB) version is expected to be completed early in 2019, providing more volume and payload.

The system can rapidly come into action and carry out a fire mission as it is fitted with an onboard computerised fire control system (FCS), which is coupled to a land navigation system and an automatic gun-laying system. A muzzle velocity radar is mounted above the 155mm/52 calibre ordnance, which feeds information into the onboard FCS. An auxiliary power unit is fitted, which enables all the main subsystems to be run with the main diesel engine switched off. Currently undergoing firing trials is the latest Aleksandar 155mm/52 calibre SP artillery system, which uses the same KAMAZ 8x8 chassis as the NORA but the ordnance on its turntable is remote-controlled and provided with a ready-use magazine with 12 rounds of 155mm ammunition. This version is being marketed with a standard 23-litre chamber, which meets the NATO Joint Ballistic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), or a larger 25-litre chamber, which gives an increase in range. The KAMAZ 8x8 platform is also used as the basis for the Shumadia ARS, which has four launcher tubes at the rear. These can launch rockets out to a maximum range of 285km using trajectory correction, with a claimed circular error probability of 50m. Vietnamese debut Vietnam is exhibiting at Indo Defence for the first time (Stand B095, Vietnam pavilion) with a wide range of products from the General Department of Defense Industry, VIETTEL group and GAET Corporation. These include infantry weapons, ships, mini unmanned aerial vehicles, communication systems, electrooptical devices and jamming equipment. Infantry weapons currently being manufactured and offered for export include the 9mm SN9 pistol, the 7.62mm SN7TD pistol and the 7.62mm SN7M pistol. The 9mm SN9P sub-machine gun is also being marketed with a single-shot grenade launcher mounted underneath to provide a short-range fire suppression capability. Assault rifles include the 7.62mm G1, G3, STV 125 and STV 380; sniper rifles are the 7.62mm 4 MK4 and the longer range and heavier 12.7mm SBT 12 M1, which is provided with a bipod and carrying handle and can be fitted with various sighting systems. The assault rifles are chambered for 7.62 x 39mm ammunition; the SBT 12 M1 sniper rifle for 12.7 x 107mm ammunition. At the heavier end of the spectrum are the 60mm SC60 long-range mortar and the 100mm SC100 mortar. Vietnam s version of the 40mm rocket propelled grenade (RPG) launcher is designated the SCT41. BY SAM J BASCH For a hard-hitting coastal or riverine capability, PT Lundin (Hall D, Stand D221) has the ideal solution in the form of its X18 Tank Boat. In co-operation with CMI Defence and PT Pindad, the company is showing the innovative, fast, stealthy and highly manoeuvrable catamaran design sporting a 105mm weapon system. The X18 is powered by two MAN 1200hp diesel engines and a pair of MJP450 waterjet propulsors. With its shallow draft, the 18m vessel operates effortlessly at sea and is able to execute beach and river landings to insert up to 20 special forces or marines. It carries a crew of six and a high-speed interdiction rigid inflatable boat (RIB) for boarding or Seal insertion. The Tank Boat s main weapon is the CMI Defence Cockerill C3105, based on a powerful Power on water high-pressure low-recoil 105mm gun. It can engage a broad spectrum of targets at up to 5,000m range and indirectly up to 10,000m. The 105mm is also capable of firing the Cockerill Falarick 105 gun-launched anti-tank guided missile (GLATGM) for exceptional engagement capability in complex situations. The weapon system can be augmented with the Bofors LEMUR remote weapon system incorporating a mm machine gun/cannon or 40mm grenade launcher. This type of system allows for flexibility in logistics with various calibres already commonly used with NATO and other major powers. According to the company, it is the first time it has conceived of mounting this type of system aboard a small, fast and stealthy catamaran, making it ideal for the confines of coastal waterway operations.

This is a notable push by the company to increase its presence in the region, SEDA says. It is relocating to the larger site in Botany to increase its footprint and staff numbers. The facility will be used for the testing and maintenance of Australian armed forces capabilities, specifically submarine optronic masts, and will provide the company with the ability to ramp up its response to upcoming tenders in the region for land and maritime programmes. SEDA has already doubled its workforce in 2018, and is planning further growth for Firearms quality assured Croatian company HS Produkt (Stand FP112) is an accredited manufacturer of handguns, combat guns and assault rifles. Its most successful product is the HS series of semiautomatic pistols, which is being marketed in the US by Springfield Armory under the XD (extreme Duty) brand. HS Produkt signed a long-term marketing contract with Springfield in 2001 and exports some 95 per cent of its products to the US market.
